Job summary

Schnabel Engineering seeks a temporary full-time Civil Engineering Intern to support our growing geotechnical and earth-focused practice for May–August 2027. The role emphasizes applying professional principles to real problems under supervision.

You will gain hands-on experience in field work, construction observation, laboratory testing, and preparing basic drawings with AutoCAD and GIS while collaborating with senior engineers.

• Currently enrolled in ABET-accredited Civil Engineering bachelor's program.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team.
• Willingness to perform office and field tasks outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical field work including observing geotechnical subsurface exploration, using GPS to layout borings, and performing infiltration testing.
• Performing construction observation and materials testing at construction sites
• Performing laboratory testing
• Create basic plans and figures using AutoCAD and GIS
• Providing support to engineers on preparing geotechnical proposals and reports
• Some travel may be required

The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior engineering personnel. The position will be held from May through August of 2027.

Required Skills/Experience:

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s. Enrollment in other college engineering or relevant science programs may be considered.
• Possess good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work
• Desire and willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills/Experience:

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Junior, senior, and graduate students
• Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field

Other Requirements:

• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license as driving is an essential function of the job
• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
