Job summary

Schnabel Inc. in Boise, Idaho is seeking a Civil Engineering intern to support our geotechnical and earth-related projects. The internship runs May through August 2027 and is meant to broaden practical knowledge under senior engineers.

The paid role includes field and office work, AutoCAD and GIS tasks, and preparation of geotechnical proposals. Eligible students gain hands-on experience at an ENR Top 500 firm with ESOP benefits.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s.
• Good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy.
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team.
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work.
• Desire and willingness to work outdoors.
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical field work including subsurface exploration watching, GPS layout of borings, and infiltration testing.
• Perform construction observation and materials testing at sites.
• Perform laboratory testing.
• Create basic plans and figures using AutoCAD and GIS.
• Provide support to engineers on geotechnical proposals and reports.
• Some travel may be required.

The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior engineering personnel. The position will be held from May through August of 2027.

Job Responsibilities:

• Performing geotechnical field work including observing geotechnical subsurface exploration, using GPS to layout borings, and performing infiltration testing

Required Skills/Experience:

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s. Enrollment in other college engineering or relevant science programs may be considered.
• Possess good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work
• Desire and willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills/Experience:

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Junior, senior, and graduate students
• Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field

Other Requirements:

• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license as driving is an essential function of the job
• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

The compensation range for a Civil Engineering Intern is between $19.00 to $25.00. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
