Job summary

Schnabel Inc. is seeking a temporary full-time Civil Engineering intern for May through August 2027 in Marquette, MI. You will support geotechnical field work, construction observation, and lab testing under senior engineers.

Opportunities to learn, grow, and apply engineering principles in real projects abound. The role favors undergraduates enrolled in ABET-accredited programs, with strong communication skills and willingness to work in field and office environments, and with a valid U.S.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering, Geology, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Environmental Engineering Bachelor's program.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and computer literacy.
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team and perform a variety of tasks including office and field work.
• Willingness to work outdoors and the ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical field work including observing subsurface exploration and GPS boring layouts.
• Conduct construction observation and materials testing at sites.
• Perform laboratory testing and assist with data collection.
• Create basic plans/figures using AutoCAD and GIS.
• Support engineers in preparing geotechnical proposals and reports.
• Travel may be required.

Job Description:

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. Schnabel is seeking a temporary full-time intern with a Civil Engineering background to support our growing business. The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior engineering personnel. The position will be held from May through August of 2027.

Job Responsibilities:

• Performing geotechnical field work including observing geotechnical subsurface exploration, using GPS to layout borings, and performing infiltration testing
• Performing construction observation and materials testing at construction sites
• Performing laboratory testing
• Create basic plans and figures using AutoCAD and GIS
• Providing support to engineers on preparing geotechnical proposals and reports
• Some travel may be required

Required Skills/Experience:

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering, Geology, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Environmental Engineering Bachelor’s. Enrollment in other relevant science programs may be considered.
• Possess good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work
• Desire and willingness to work outdoorsAbility to routinely lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills/Experience:

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Junior, senior, and graduate students
• Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field

Other Requirements:

• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license as driving is an essential function of the job
• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

The compensation range for a Civil Engineering Intern is between $19.00 to $25.00. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
