Job Description - Civil Engineer Specialist – Pavement Designer (25141024)

Position Title:

TheMontana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Civil Engineer Specialist in the Pavement Design section. Positions in the Pavement Design section are responsible for conducting in-depth engineering and analysis and project design. Work is assigned through instruction on specific engineering objectives and direction and the incumbent determines the best solution based on established engineering guidelines, knowledge and skills. Completed work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

Required Education and Experience:

(All levels require a combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field of study. Related degrees may include Environmental Engineering, Geologic/Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineer, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Science)

Entry Level – Civil Engineering Specialist Level 1 ($31.04)

Prior work experience is not required for entry level.

Mid-Level – Civil Engineering Specialist Level 2 ($32.31)

This position also requires a minimum of 6 months to 2 years of engineering or directly related work experience.

Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: Proof of passage of the Fundamental Engineering Exam (FE).

Top Level – Civil Engineering Specialist Level 3 ($37.36)

This position also requires a minimum of 2 years to 4 years of engineering or directly related work experience.

Certifications, licensure, or other credentials include: Proof of passage of the Fundamental Engineering Exam (FE), Engineering Intern Certification (EIT), or licensed Professional Engineer.

This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Conducts and coordinates complex pavement engineering to determine the most appropriate pavement designs for major highway construction projects.
  • Formulates engineering investigations and develops surfacing design alternatives based on project scope and budget.
  • Organizes and writes comprehensive reports to present findings and recommendations; prepares special provisions and cost estimates.
  • Knowledge of the theories, concepts, and principles pavement engineering.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting complex plans and special provisions.
  • Ability to investigate, analyze, and form objective solutions to engineering problems with sound engineering judgment.
  • The capability to present and defend ideas, policy, standard procedure, and emerging technology.

Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
