The person in this position will work on multidisciplinary project teams providing civil engineering, hydraulic and hydrologic analysis, and related technical expertise. Primary responsibilities will include development of plans and specifications, site drainage and stormwater control plans, and erosion protection plans; cost estimating; fieldwork such as construction observation; hydraulic design and analysis of conveyance systems; design and analysis of energy dissipation structures; report writing; surveying; collecting hydrologic or water quality measurements; and materials testing.

The person in this position will work on multidisciplinary project teams providing civil engineering, hydraulic and hydrologic analysis, and related technical expertise. Primary responsibilities will include development of plans and specifications, site drainage and stormwater control plans, and erosion protection plans; cost estimating; fieldwork such as construction observation; hydraulic design and analysis of conveyance systems; design and analysis of energy dissipation structures; report writing; surveying; collecting hydrologic or water quality measurements; and materials testing.

The work may at times involve short-term, out-of-town assignments either in the field or in another office. As markets fluctuate, opportunities may also include grading plans and earthwork balance calculations, stormwater planning, hydrologic runoff modeling and analysis (hydrologic modeling, open channel and pipe flow design and design of water control structures), water balance analysis, hydraulic analysis (including analysis and design of hydraulic structures, pipes, and pumps), and other general site-civil work. The work will also include communication with permitting agencies and public officials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related degree with an emphasis on water resources
  • 6 years of relevant professional experience with an emphasis on hydraulic engineering
  • Professional engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain certification within one year
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: civil site design, plans and specifications development, earthwork and grading plans, cost estimating, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, hydraulic structure design, and/or open channel and pipe flow modeling
  • Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and/or other CADD software
  • Familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic computer modeling packages
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
  • Experience mentoring entry-level engineers
  • A flexible working style as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in civil engineering with an emphasis on water resources
  • 8 or more years of relevant professional experience
  • Project or task management experience
  • Experience with proposal development
  • Project design experience (e.g., site and roadway design, stormwater management facility design, design of water or wastewater infrastructure), including cost estimating and preparation of plans and specifications
  • Construction observation experience
  • Experience with water resources challenges in Utah including water rights; precipitation and flooding data analysis; urban and rural hydrologic analysis; hydraulic structure condition assessment; stormwater quality and green stormwater infrastructure design; bank stabilization and stream restoration; floodplain analysis and mapping; water balance analysis; lake and stream water quality issues
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of civil engineering topics
  • Significant experience with GIS, Civil 3D, or other design software experience
  • Significant experience with hydrologic and hydraulic models.


A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Salt Lake City, Utah, office.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $95,000–$110,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

NOTE: Must be able to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and conditions typical of industrial facilities. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided.
