Job Summary
The City of Olathe is seeking a skilled and motivated Civil Engineer to join our Street Preservation Program team. This role offers hands-on experience in public sector engineering and the opportunity to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of municipal infrastructure while working alongside experienced professionals.
About the Role
As part of our dynamic engineering team, you will play a key role in managing, maintaining, and repairing over 1,300 lane miles of street pavement, including associated curbs and sidewalks. The City prioritizes projects annually to maintain a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of at least 70, utilizing various pavement preservation strategies such as crack sealing, micro surfacing, mill and overlay, and complete reconstruction. Funding for these projects comes from the Capital Improvement Plan, Street Maintenance Sales Tax, and additional sources such as grants.
This position is designed as a two-level career progression, allowing candidates to enter at either the Civil Engineer II or Civil Engineer III level, depending on experience and qualifications.

The Civil Engineer III acts as the project manager for design and construction of projects. Project scopes may include street preservation, street reconstruction, stormwater systems, water and wastewater systems, treatment facilities, and rehabilitation projects, including inflow and infiltration (I&I) reduction. The Civil Engineer III is the top level of a two-level career progression of Civil Engineer II - III.
Key Responsibilities
Qualifications
Experience: Four or more years of engineering and project management experience is required. Experience working in a municipality or Public Works Department is preferred.
Education: A bachelor's degree with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field is required. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.
Licenses & Certifications: Must be a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Kansas or able to obtain one within six months. A valid driver's license with a favorable driving record is also required.
Environmental or Physical Demands: Requires working in various locations and conditions, often splitting time between an office and construction sites.
