Job description

Job Summary

The Civil Engineer II position is responsible for managing the day‑to‑day activities on small and moderately sized projects, designing complete projects, and preparing complete project documents.

Essential Functions
  • Assign tasks and coordinate work with entry‑level engineers.
  • Assist in determining schedule and budget requirements.
  • Assist with proposals to provide professional services.
  • Prepare permit applications.
  • Coordinate with public and regulatory agencies.
  • Occasionally interact with clients, customers, officials, contractors, and others.
  • Receive instruction on specific objectives.
  • Receive a thorough review of completed work for the application of sound professional judgment.
  • Travel to remote project sites as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Competencies
  • Gather and analyze data; reason logically and creatively; draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Basic knowledge of the design process and proficiency in modeling software.
  • Prioritize and organize work, work well under stress, and meet deadlines.
  • Adapt to constant change and work flexible hours as required.
  • Facilitate public meetings (public speaking) and communicate effectively with staff, clients, and contractors.
  • Skill in Microsoft Excel, Word, and AutoCAD.
  • Travel and perform field work away from direct supervision.
  • Travel to remote locations in adverse Arctic weather conditions.
  • Perform tasks safely and responsibly.
  • Knowledge of civil construction techniques and sequencing.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience in civil engineering.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Project.
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling software such as HEC-RAS.
Work Environment

The work environment may involve both interior and exterior conditions, noise that could require vocal projection, proximity to moving mechanical parts or vehicles, exposure to Arctic conditions or chemicals, and variable atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, or poor ventilation. The environment is typically comparable to a standard office setting.

Physical Qualifications
  • Mobility: ability to stoop, kneel, reach, walk, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Hearing: ability to hear audible safety alarms.
  • Visual acuity: adequate vision to perform tasks such as viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Lifting: ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly.
