Job summary

City of Chesapeake is seeking civil engineers at Engineer I–III levels to support municipal projects. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required, with experience differing by level. PE licensure is required to qualify for Engineer III. Applicants should be prepared for potential overtime during emergencies.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. For Engineer I, four years of relevant full-time experience will be assessed in lieu of a bachelor's degree.

Experience Requirement:

• Engineer I: No experience required for applicants who possess a bachelor's degree; non-degreed applicants must have two years of experience in addition to the degree equivalency.
• Engineer II: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
• Engineer III : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required to qualify for Engineer III. Depending on position, additional State and/or City certification(s) may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
