Job summary

A leading engineering firm in Chicago is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to lead technical design and mentoring within a collaborative environment focusing on critical municipal water and sewer infrastructure projects. Candidates should have an ABET-accredited degree in Civil Engineering, relevant experience, and strong communication skills. The role involves project leadership, client relationship management, and contributing to high-impact capital programs, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and practices.

Qualifications

  • 7 years of civil engineering experience with a bachelor's degree.
  • 6 years of experience with a master's degree.
  • EPC project experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead civil design from conceptual development through final design.
  • Prepare civil specifications and coordinate with suppliers.
  • Support project planning including scope, schedule, staffing, and budget.

  • Manage and evaluate change orders.
  • Apply knowledge of civil codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Develop non-standard design solutions for complex challenges.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of drawings, specs, and construction documents.

Location: Chicago, IL (Office-based with project site visits)

Duration: February 9, 2026 – February 6, 2027

Employment Type: Contract

About the Role

Our growing Water (WTR) practice is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to support complex, fast-paced infrastructure projects in northeastern Illinois. These projects, while smaller in size, are technically demanding and play a critical role in enabling major sewer rehabilitation programs for the City.

This role offers the opportunity to take on technical leadership, contribute to high-impact capital programs, and mentor engineers within a respected, collaborative engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead civil design from conceptual development through final design
  • Prepare civil specifications, data sheets, RFQs, bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations
  • Review vendor drawings and coordinate with suppliers, clients, and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Support project planning including scope, schedule, staffing, budget, and construction planning
  • Manage and evaluate change orders
  • Apply expert knowledge of civil engineering codes, standards, and best practices
  • Develop non-standard design solutions for complex engineering challenges
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of production drawings, specifications, and construction documentation
  • Support construction administration, including field inspections and resolving installation issues
  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry audiences
  • Build and maintain strong client and contractor relationships
  • Participate in business development, sales, and proposal efforts
  • Develop and manage project budgets, cost estimates, and performance reporting
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and contribute to practice leadership
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies, QA/QC standards, and company procedures
Required Qualifications

One of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (ABET accredited) + 7 years of civil engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Engineering Technology (ABET accredited) + FE exam completed + 7 years of experience
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering + 6 years of experience
Additional Requirements
  • EPC project experience (preferred)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to review detailed engineering documents and specifications
  • Excellent organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
