Job summary

Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF) seeks a civil engineering designer to support the production of infrastructure plans and construction documents.

The role emphasizes stormwater, water, wastewater, and roadway design, with responsibilities across CAD drafting, field verification, and design coordination. The ideal candidate will have a 2–4 year civil engineering degree and at least 2 years of relevant site design experience, working in a team in a local MD environment.

Qualifications

  • Two- or four-year degree in civil engineering is preferred.
  • Minimum two years’ experience with basic civil/site design including grading and drainage.
  • Experience with utilities and erosion control for residential and commercial projects.

Responsibilities

  • Use design software and CAD to plan, design, and permit water, sewer, roadway, and streetscape projects.
  • Perform civil design analysis and calculations per project requirements.
  • Prepare correspondence, estimates, and bid documents for clients.
  • Conduct field activities, record conditions, and verify measurements.
  • Integrate survey data and jurisdiction codes into designs.
  • Use feedback to modify designs and develop solutions.

Overview

At Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), Designers play an essential supporting role in the production of a variety of infrastructure designs. This group helps to enhance, maintain and protect the communities we work, live, and play in. In this role, we are looking for an individual who is self-motivated, driven, and reliable; one who will identify opportunities to improve the quality of work and services and participate in their implementation. This position will include reviewing technical drawings and assisting in the preparation of construction documents. The ideal candidate should have knowledge in stormwater, water, wastewater, and roadway design. Operating in both the public and private sectors, the ideal candidate would be aware of all local, state, and federal regulations as they relate to those areas.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize design software, computer aided drafting, and other applicable tools to plan, design, and permit projects such as water infrastructure sanitary sewer infrastructure, roadway and streetscape improvements, and stormwater conveyance/management.
  • Perform civil design analysis and calculations according to project requirements.
  • Prepare and/or assist in preparation of correspondence, cost estimates and bid documents for clients.
  • Perform field activities such as observing and recording existing field conditions and taking verifying measurements within project areas.
  • Incorporate all information from surveys, project documentation, and jurisdiction codes into design.
  • Use feedback to modify existing designs and develop solutions
  • Provide timely technical assistance.
Education & Skills

The preferred candidate shall possess a two (2) or four (4) year degree in civil engineering, and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience with basic civil/site design, including grading and drainage, utilities and erosion design control for residential and commercial projects.
