Job summary

The City Forester at City of Madison leads the Urban Forestry work unit within the Streets Division, directing care, protection, and planting of all city trees. You’ll supervise staff through subordinate supervisors and manage safety, budgets, and contracts to expand the canopy.

Collaborating with multiple city departments and partners, you will develop programs, monitor performance metrics, and ensure equity-focused forestry initiatives.

Qualifications

• 4 years of experience applying planting, pruning, removal, treating, fertilizing, and inspecting shade and ornamental trees.
• 2 years of supervisory experience and budget administration.
• Bachelor's Degree in forestry or forest management or related field, or equivalent supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Direct Forestry work unit operations and set goals/metrics.
• Lead tree protection, planting, and hazard response programs.
• Oversee budgets, contracts, and procurement for urban forestry.
• Coordinate with city departments and partners on canopy strategies and equity goals.
• Ensure safety and compliance with national standards (A300, ANSI Z133).
• Report performance and present at boards/committees as required.
