Job summary

City and County of San Francisco is conducting a Citywide Exam for the Social Work Supervisor classification. This permanent civil service position oversees social services units across Adult Services, Family and Children’s Services, In-Home Supportive Services, and related programs.

Applicants will be evaluated via a class-based examination process and placed on an eligible list upon passing the exam. Qualified candidates have a bachelor’s degree, at least 3 years of verifiable social casework

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Three (3) years (6,000 hours) of verifiable social casework or employment services experience with a public or private agency/organization.
• Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling may substitute for one year of experience.
• Education substitution allows for additional experience in lieu of the degree on a year-for-year basis (up to two years).

Responsibilities

• Supervise the schedule and work activities of a unit by planning and delegating the work of a unit involved in providing casework, client management, continuing client investigation, transportation, and processing services for programs in Adult Services, Family and Children’s Services, In-Home Supportive Services, and the Homeless Program.
• Manage the professional development of staff by participating in the selection of unit staff, providing staff training and coaching, and ongoing feedback; ensure performance appraisals are used effectively and timely to develop growth plans and identify opportunities for staff to learn.
• Ensure staff’s work meets program compliance with applicable policies and procedures by reviewing completed cases, assignments and ongoing referrals, and recommending corrective action when required.
• Coach staff on emergency calls and crisis situations of appropriate case action and suggesting methods and strategies to resolve problems.
• Handle regular consultations and unit meetings to share updates and other important information.
• Attend program meetings, provide updates, and participate in program or policy improvement initiatives.
• Build collaborative relationships with staff, supervisors, other departments, professionals, and community partners to identify and provide services to clients.
• Respond to inquiries and referrals from staff, other departments, community organizations, and the general public.
• Investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints while maintaining confidentiality.
• Research opportunities for continuous improvement, stay up-to-date of the latest policies and best practices in social services; share professional literature and training opportunities with staff; and recommend improvements to operations of unit activities.
• Prepare quantitative and narrative reports for managers and other program stakeholders.
