Job summary

Bristol Public Schools is seeking a City-wide Paraeducator for the Learning Center, currently stationed at NEMS. You will assist in small group and individual pupil instruction under a special education teacher, ensuring safety and smooth operation of the classroom.

Responsibilities include supporting instructional activities, managing transitions, and helping with IEP implementation while maintaining effective relationships with students, staff, and the community.

Qualifications

Position Title

CITY-WIDE PARAEDUCATOR, LEARNING CENTER, CURRENTLY AT NEMS

Department

NORTHEAST MIDDLE SCHOOL

Reports To

Special Education Teacher

Summary

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Assist teacher in maintaining discipline.
  • Assist teacher with instructional activities.
  • Escort students from room to room.
  • Tend to student toileting when required.
  • Work with both special education and regular students.
  • Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEPs.
  • Supervise students while they are at recess and lunch.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments.
  • Copy materials for instructional purposes.
  • Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork.
  • Alert teachers to problems that may be observed.

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree.
  • Two years of college credit or an associate’s or higher degree; or successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment which evaluates content knowledge in mathematics, reading, and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment).
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide with tens and hundreds.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
Computer Skills
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with job‑related computer hardware and software applications.
Reasoning Ability
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions.
  • Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, or hear.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to push items up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires use of close, distance, and peripheral vision.
Work Environment
  • Noise level typical of classrooms with school children; a standard acceptable level for this environment.
  • Work throughout the school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus.
  • Responsible for the safety and well‑being of students in charge.
Compensation and Working Hours

Salary range: $22.12 – $25.18 (per contractual agreement BPS Contracts).

Work hours: 6.5 hours per day (7:45 am to 2:45 pm).

Date of Service

26 – 27 syndicate year.
