Job summary

The Seattle City Attorney's Office seeks one or more Assistant City Prosecutors to join the Criminal Division. This role involves prosecuting misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and traffic infractions in Seattle Municipal Court, developing trial skills in a fast-paced environment, and contributing to policies promoting equity and accountability.

Candidates must be admitted to the Washington State Bar or eligible within 30 days; Rule 9 LLBs may apply.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the rules of evidence and criminal procedure.
• Effective legal research and writing.
• Persuasive advocacy to present the prosecution's case as a narrative.
• Ability to address a wide variety of legal issues quickly.
• Creativity in developing different solutions to problems; and
• Flexibility to respond to competing demands.

Responsibilities

• Represents the City Attorney in prosecuting misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor offenses; learns prosecutorial techniques, meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Reviews citations, arrest sheets, and other documents; gathers facts and data; conducts factual and legal analysis to decide charges.
• Drafts complaints, briefs, motions, and legal documents.
• Manages cases; confers with witnesses; negotiates plea agreements within guidelines; develops trial strategy.
• Coordinates with Seattle Police and other agencies to verify basis for prosecution or dismissal.
• Represents the City at arraignments, hearings, and trials; compiles records; identifies witnesses; interviews and cross-examines witnesses.
• Assists prosecutors in preparing complex arraignments, motions, pleas, and hearings.
• Adheres to professional ethics and integrity.
