Job summary

City of Des Plaines seeks a City Engineer to oversee engineering planning, design, and construction for streets, utilities, and drainage. You will lead a division, manage staff, consultants, and budgets, and ensure regulatory compliance.

The role requires a PE license in Illinois, a civil engineering degree, and extensive experience in municipal infrastructure. Strong supervisory, communication, and project-management skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or a related field, and seven years of professional civil engineering experience, three years in a supervisory/managerial role.
• Exceptional knowledge of municipal infrastructure engineering.
• Proficiency in engineering design software, AutoCAD, GIS and project management tools.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer in Illinois.
• Ability to obtain Illinois Class “D” driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain Certified Floodplain Manager Certification within 18 months.

Responsibilities

• Directs day-to-day operations of the engineering staff, performing supervision and professional engineering work.
• Reviews and approves plans and specs for private developments.
• Advises developers, engineers, and contractors on city codes and procedures.
• Plans and supervises design of public works improvements and long-range capital plans.
• Coordinates with agencies and administers contracts for public works projects.

Education

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field
