POSITION OVERVIEW:
Pick up and deliver freight between Service Centers and customers, supporting the selling process.
Essential Functions
- Operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles (and triples where applicable) and straight trucks.
- Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment.
- Hook and unhook trailers and converter dollies from tractors and trailers.
- Handle freight using motorized and manual equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
- Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, and ropes.
- Recoup or repair damaged freight when necessary.
- Complete required documentation and reports.
- Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures.
- Collect freight charges via cash or checks and maintain documentation.
- Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays, arrivals, or equipment issues.
- Communicate with customers regarding pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
- Seek additional business opportunities and provide leads to sales.
- Perform chaining of vehicle tires if required.
- Perform duties of road driver or dock employee as operationally necessary.
- Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
Qualifications
- Possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements. Automatic transmission restriction allowed.
- At least one year of recent driving experience or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.
- Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) according to hiring standards.
- Meet all DOT regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier regulations.
- For states with Long Combination Vehicles (LCV), meet the LCV Qualification and Certification Standards.
- Ability to perform basic math and count accurately.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to lift/carry freight weighing up to 100 pounds regularly.
- Physical ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, and climb in and out of trucks.
- Follow instructions and complete training successfully.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions
- Drive in various weather conditions and on all types of roads.
- Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes, and DOT-shipped hazardous materials.
- Hours may vary based on operational needs.
- Hazardous Materials endorsement must be obtained within 120 days of job offer.
