City Attorney - City of Charlotte, North Carolina

The award-winning City of Charlotte is recruiting nationally for a highly experienced City Attorney. This exceptional executive position provides legal advice and representation to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, City Clerk and many other departments, boards and commissions, agencies, officials, and employees on a broad range of legal issues. The City Attorney reports directly to the Mayor and City Council. The successful candidate should be a proven leader who inspires and empowers professional staff to achieve results through collaboration, robust analysis, and excellent decision-making.

The ideal candidate for the position of City Attorney will be an experienced legal professional who is eager to join a highly collaborative team that truly enjoys working together to advance the City Council’s priorities; the City Attorney will work well with elected and appointed officials, including the department director team. The new City Attorney will be a strong leader capable of effectively managing a robust legal office. The City Attorney will have exceptional interpersonal skills and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, and high performing organization. Additionally, the City Attorney will have a reputation for strategic and decisive legal leadership with a strong foundation built on local government legal experience preferably in North Carolina. The ideal candidate will have a style that supports an active and involved City Council that works best with highly communicative and engaging professionals.

This position requires:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school;
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina or eligible for comity licensure;
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience;
  • Broad knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence, with successful trial and appellate litigation experience; and
  • Highly skilled in legal research, drafting legal documents, ordinances, and opinions, and providing legal advice in public and private.
