Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking an experienced Chief Architect to perform advanced professional and administrative architectural work within the Architecture Division of the Planning, Engineering and Permitting Department.

This leadership role oversees design and construction, contract administration, and coordination with end users, consultants, and staff to ensure projects meet regulatory requirements and city goals.

Qualifications

• Licensed architect in Alabama or NCARB licensure leading to AL licensure within six weeks.
• Experience managing a multi-project portfolio through all design phases.
• Procurement of design and construction services including bid/award processes.
• Compliance with federal, state and local construction laws and codes (ADA, EPA, IBC).
• Developing contract documents (owner-architect, owner-contractor, owner-special service).
• Coordinate activities and schedules of end users, consultants and staff through construction.

Responsibilities

• Lead advanced, complex projects within the Architecture Division to meet goals and objectives.
• Oversee contract administration including public bidding and consultant reviews.
• Prepare reports, maintain records, and respond to public/city inquiries.
• Supervise staff, assign work, provide guidance and training.
• Conduct periodic field reviews and site inspections of projects.
• Analyze property documents for site development considerations.
• Present to Mayor and officials on Public Works projects.
