The Right-of-Way Services (ROWS) Survey Section has an opening for a full-time, unlimited City Surveyor. We value strong leadership, innovative foresight, experience, and knowledge in Surveying. The City and County of Denver recognizes professional experience as a substitute for a degree for this role. The City Surveyor is a prominent position in Colorado, working with various stakeholders and overseeing monument preservation and maintenance programs.

The Survey Section includes 30 professionals and technicians providing land survey expertise to the department and other city agencies. The team reviews development projects, assists with land acquisition, and handles subdivision plats, site plans, annexations, street vacations, easements, land disposal, leases, and addressing. The City Surveyor will lead this team, offering growth and leadership opportunities.

Key Responsibilities of the City Surveyor
  • Lead the Survey Office by planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating staff work; resolve issues.
  • Manage team leads supervising field survey crews, assigning daily tasks, and monitoring progress.
  • Oversee the budget, resources, and technology for the Survey Office.
  • Maintain official records, maps, and survey records.
  • Coordinate with other city agencies for survey requests and support.
  • Assist in updating business plans, programs, and goals.
  • Review subdivision requests, plans, and survey records for accuracy.
  • Engage with the public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and organizations regarding survey practices and legislation.
  • Represent DOTI in meetings and stakeholder engagements.
Qualifications

Ideal Candidate:

  • Extensive experience supervising a surveying team in a management role.
  • Skills in innovative data use and traditional surveying techniques.
  • Experience working with municipal government and external stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Surveying, Engineering, Science, or related field.
  • Experience: 5 years managing surveying functions and professional Land Surveyors.
  • License/Certifications: Valid Driver's License; Licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) by Colorado or another state (with Colorado licensure within probation).

Note: Two years of relevant experience can substitute for each year of post-high school education.
