The Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) - Chronic Pain Management at Veterans Health Administration primarily provides pain services to veterans in support of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) as part of the Pain Management Team.

Duties include conducting histories and exams, delivering outpatient care, screening patients, prescribing within scope, ordering diagnostic tests, education, and participating in pain care committees under the VHA Stepped Care Model.

• Conduct history and physical examinations during in-person, telephone and virtual encounters.
• Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients according to VHA policies and guidelines.
• Screen outpatients to determine the need for further care.
• Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice.
• Order diagnostic studies (e.g., X-rays, labs, ECG).
• Enter notes on procedures performed and responsibilities held.
• Educate and counsel patients and families on preventive care, medical conditions, and treatments.
• Support pain care committees and inter-disciplinary pain care forums.
• Treat pain complaints in complex cases alongside other pain staff per the VHA model.
• Provide coverage and receive coverage when staff are on leave.
