Job summary

Marion County Public Defender Agency in Indianapolis seeks an attorney to provide client-centered representation for indigent parents in CHINS and TPR cases filed by the Indiana Department of Child Services in Marion County. Independent judgment is routinely exercised in a complex, policy-light environment.

The incumbent reports to the Division Chief and must possess a JD, Indiana bar license, and at least two years of CHINS/TPR experience, with strong communication and collaboration skills,

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate required and licensed to practice law in Indiana.
• At least two years of CHINS/TPR experience and trial experience in TPR matters.
• Strong verbal and written communication, and presentation abilities.
• Top-level interpersonal and facilitation skills are essential.
• Computer proficiency and a valid driver’s license are required.
• Compliance with Indiana Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys standards is mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Appear frequently in court to advocate for parents in CHINS/TPR matters.
• Conduct legal and factual reviews; interview clients and witnesses.
• Advise clients on legal matters and navigating the child welfare system.
• Negotiate with the Department of Child Services and service providers.
• Communicate progress with clients in person, by phone, or in writing.
• Collaborate with social workers on multidisciplinary strategies.
• Delegate tasks to paralegals and investigations when appropriate.
• Maintain client confidentiality at all times.
• Role may expand with management’s needs; not an exhaustive list.
