Job description

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is a fun, casual atmosphere that is centered on excellent programming, customer service, and community. We strive for excellence in the workplace within an environment that fosters creativity and learning.

DPR is seeking a part-time Children's Leader who is a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to teach children’s preschool programs for children ages 3 – 5. The Children's Leader will have the opportunity to help shape the program as he/she provides exceptional preschool care and education.

The Children's Leader will contribute to the department goal of inspiring life-long connections through education, play, and exploration in a premier preschool environment that supports the whole child’s development while preparing children for school, through active leadership. Class sizes will range from 8-24 children with one Head Children's Leader and 1-2 children's leaders.

This program is licensed by the Department of Education; therefore, the Children’s Leader is partially responsible for ensuring compliance with the regulations pertaining to the Department of Social Services and best practices of early childhood education. The Children's Leader is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of the children they are assigned to.

Responsibilities:
  • Delivering well-planned, high-quality preschool programs and summer camps. Programs are planned and implemented through collaboration with the Children Leaders and Recreation Supervisor, review of current registration and surveys to better understand the needs of the programs.
  • Ensures quality guest interactions. Parents, students, and staff are treated respectfully and timely. They feel their concerns have been heard and addressed fairly.
  • Establish policies within the class to ensure safety and security of staff and patrons. Monitor patron and staff injury and accident logs and follow up on how we can fix the issue.
  • Ensure all staff receive training on safety protocols and policies and procedures for SBDCRC building, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces. Monitor to ensure all are being followed and documented.
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance with all state licensing requirements.
Preferences:
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working with preschool or school aged children in a recreation program or classroom.
  • Knowledge of VA Department of Education (DOE) licensing standards.
  • Experience delivering excellent customer service.
  • Experience utilizing computer and relevant software applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to make decisions based on best practices for the program.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Schedule Requirements: Primary hours Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4. The schedule may vary depending upon class offerings.

Special Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and meet the hiring qualifications outlined by the Department of Social Services for Child Care.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Requirements: 8th grade education and 0-12 months of related experience (*State mandates require a high school diploma or G.E.D for specific licensed program positions).

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
