Work requires knowledge of anesthesia practices and aseptic technique as well as the daily organization, stocking, set-up, and cleaning of anesthesia equipment and supply environments used in patient care according to departmental and regulatory standards. The anesthesia technician performs duties under the supervision of licensed anesthesia care providers in various clinical settings, including the setup of IV manufacturer-made maintenance fluids, fluid warmers, and pressure transducers, as well as performing select Point of Care tests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • Associate Degree from Anesthesiology Technology Program OR Associate Degree in Medical Assisting with National Certification as a CMA OR High School Diploma or Equivalent AND Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse, Paramedic, or Veterinary Technician OR Two (2) years experience as an Anesthesia Care Assistant
  • Current Licensure in applicable discipline.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) year of nursing assistant and/or patient care experience.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Understand and practice aseptic technique. Ensure proper disposal of one-time use items. Set up and spike IV maintenance fluids (excluding patient-specific compound bags from pharmacy). May set up disposable supplies for sterile anesthesia field.
  2. Evaluate equipment needs of patients transferred from critical care units to the OR and vice versa. Assist with connecting proper monitoring equipment post-surgery.
  3. Ensure availability of basic anesthesia equipment, including emergency airway equipment. Assist anesthesia providers with intubations and other procedures by acquiring supplies, instruments, and lines. Responsible for storage, use, and safe handling of bulk and cylinder gases.
  4. Assist with line placement by aiding inserters.
  5. Check expiration dates on disposable supplies. Ensure malignant hyperthermia supplies are available.
  6. Clean hazardous spills following SDS sheets and complete incident documentation.
  7. Set up disposable supplies and assist with therapeutic pain management applications.
  8. Set up suction devices. Switch anesthesia machine tanks and recording paper. Confirm equipment readiness, including power and gas sources, and notify Biomed of concerns.
  9. Provide anesthesia support during emergencies and routine case turnover. Terminally clean and prepare equipment for the next day.
  10. Anticipate anesthesia requirements for scheduled and emergent procedures. Answer anesthesia pages during work hours.
  11. Set up IVs, fluid warmers, and pressure transducers. Acquire computer pumps.
  12. Monitor inventory of supplies. Ensure cleanliness and organization of anesthesia carts and areas. Transport medications if needed. Reprocess reusable supplies.
  13. Maintain hoses, change soda sorb and tubing, and ensure proper storage of electrical equipment.
  14. Report equipment issues, initiate repairs, and maintain logs.
  15. Stock IV bins and anesthesia exchange carts.
  16. Perform Point of Care testing within scope of practice, including quality controls.
  17. Contribute to budget planning and cost initiatives.
  18. Prepare difficult airway equipment per patient needs.
  19. Assist with procedures alongside anesthesiologists, residents, or CRNAs. Perform core duties of anesthesia care assistant. May serve as charge role.
  20. Assist with medication transport and MH kit access as permitted for unlicensed personnel.
  21. Partner with new hires for orientation and training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • No history of malignant hyperthermia.
  • Ability to wear protective gear.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds and pushing carts.
  • Visual, oral acuity, manual dexterity, and technical skills.
  • Ability to hear alarms.
