Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children in a childcare, camp, educational, recreational, tutoring, coaching, or similar setting.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to demonstrate and uphold YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Experience leading or mentoring staff is preferred.
  • Experience working in licensed childcare, youth development, recreation, or camp settings is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Open and close program areas, complete safety inspections, set up, clean, and close procedures.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to staff.
  • Assign responsibilities, monitor quality, and ensure YMCA policies are followed.
  • Make routine operational decisions to support safe and effective program delivery.
  • Monitor supplies and communicate inventory needs.
  • Train, mentor, and support staff; build positive relationships with children, families, members, and guests.
  • Address parent concerns professionally and promptly.

Summary
POSITION SUMMARY

At the Wenatchee Valley YMCA, our Child Watch and Kid Zone programs provide a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment where children can learn, play, and build meaningful relationships while their parents or caregivers utilize YMCA facilities and programs. The Child Watch / Kid Zone Head Lead is responsible for overseeing daily program operations, ensuring high-quality supervision, maintaining program safety, and creating positive experiences for children and families.

This position serves as the lead staff member during assigned shifts, providing guidance and support to Child Watch and Kid Zone staff, ensuring program quality, and serving as the primary point of contact for families. The Head Lead models YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all participants.

ABOUT THE JOB
Essential Functions
Child Supervision & Safety
  • Ensure appropriate child-to-staff ratios are maintained at all times.
  • Oversee child check-in and check-out procedures and maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and developmentally appropriate environment .
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, injuries, and behavioral concerns.
  • Complete and submit required incident reports and documentation in a timely manner .
  • Ensure compliance with all YMCA risk management, health, safety, and child protection standards.
Program Quality & Youth Development
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate games, crafts, enrichment activities, and free-play experiences.
  • Create a welcoming environment that promotes social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
  • Model positive behavior management techniques and effective child engagement strategies.
  • Foster an inclusive environment where all children feel valued, supported, and successful.
Program Operations & Leadership
  • Oversee daily operations of Child Watch and Kid Zone programs during assigned shifts.
  • Open and close program areas, completing required safety inspections, setup, cleaning, and closing procedures.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to Child Watch and Kid Zone staff .
  • Assign responsibilities, monitor program quality, and ensure compliance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Make routine operational decisions to support safe and effective program delivery and communicate significant concerns to the Youth Development Coordinator .
  • Monitor program supplies and communicate inventory and equipment needs.
Staff Development & Member Service
  • Train, mentor, and support Child Watch and Kid Zone staff.
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, members, participants, and guests.
  • Address parent and guardian concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Serve as a positive representative of the YMCA and its mission.
Other Position Functions
  • Engage members and encourage community-building, helping members connect with one another and with Y programs and services.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and special activities.
  • Collaborates with other departments, supporting special projects and cross-departmental service needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, contributing to a positive, team-oriented work environment.
