Job summary

The YMCA of Central Massachusetts is seeking a part-time Child Watch Associate at the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA to support families and nurture children ages 3 months to 12 years. You will supervise activities, ensure safety, and model the Y values in daily interactions.

Under the Youth Development Director, you’ll provide a quality, friendly experience for children and caregivers, maintain a professional appearance, and participate in staff meetings and program activities.

Qualifications

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications required with onboarding.
  • Prior experience working with children preferred.
  • ASL proficiency strongly preferred to support communication with all community members.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a group of children aged 3 months to 12 years during activities.
  • Follow safety procedures, emergency plans, and child abuse prevention guidelines.
  • Nurture children through free play and activities aligned with the Y values.
  • Build positive rapport with youth and model relationship-building skills.
  • Encourage youth leadership, problem solving, and decision making.
  • Maintain open dialogue with parents about child needs and progress.
  • Project a professional image with dependable attendance and teamwork.
  • Attend program activities and staff meetings; collaborate with coworkers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Child Watch Associate at the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families. Under the supervision of the Youth Development Director, the Child Watch Associate supervises the safety of all children in their care. They will play with, sing to, and assist all children as needed. In addition, they adhere to all YMCA child protection policies.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises a group of children and program activities for children ages 3 months old – 12 years old
  • Follows all policies, procedures, and standards as established by the law or the Y (e.g., safety or emergency procedures, behavior guidance strategies, child abuse prevention policies).
  • Nurtures children through unstructured free play and activities that are consistent with the Y’s values.
  • Creates a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth; models relationship‑building skills in all interactions.
  • Provides opportunities for youth to lead, problem‑solve, and make decisions and choices within the program.
  • Provides and welcomes ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers about their child’s needs and progress; connects families to the Y.
  • Projects a professional image, including neat appearance, positive manner and dependable attendance and is a role model for children, families, and other staff.
  • Attends and participates in program activities and staff meetings.
  • Works collaboratively and positively with other co‑workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience working with children preferred.
  • Meets minimum age standards as established by state law and or the Y.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required with onboarding.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is strongly preferred to support effective communication with all members of our community.
Job Details

Job Type: Part‑Time

Schedule: During the upcoming school year: Wednesday mornings 9 am‑12 pm. Weekly shifts start on August 31st and go through June 2027. Friday nights 4 pm‑8 pm. Weekly shifts start on August 31st and go through November 2026.

Pay: $15.00 per hour. Plus, access to YMCA facilities for all YMCA employees, Employee Assistance Program, and Sick Leave.
