Job Description

The ideal candidate will have 2 years’ experience as a Certified Child Life Specialist with the adolescent population and/or trauma.

We are offering a $10K Sign on Bonus!!

The University of Maryland Medical Center is hiring a Child Life Specialist to join the Child Life Program, providing services to adolescent patients and children of adult patients in the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. This is a new 1-year donor-funded position dedicated to treating critically ill and severely injured patients with innovative medical procedures and research aimed at saving lives.

Job Duties
  1. Assess and support the psychosocial needs of adolescent patients admitted to the Shock Trauma Center.
  2. Facilitate developmentally and situationally appropriate therapeutic interventions for adolescent patients.
  3. Develop resources to support adolescent patients and children of adult patients in high-stress situations.
  4. Educate the medical team about child life services, developmental and psychosocial needs, family-centered care practices, and identifying families with anticipatory grief.
  5. Meet with involved adults to assess psychosocial needs before implementing therapeutic interventions.
  6. Provide age-appropriate explanations about disease, grief, death, and bereavement to children and their families.
  7. Offer grief and bereavement interventions for children of adult patients, including therapeutic assessments and educational sessions for families.
  8. Collect metrics to evaluate the impact of child life services in the Shock Trauma Center.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development, or related field.
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a Certified Child Life Specialist with the adolescent population is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial preparation, procedural support, trauma-informed care, and emotional safety.
  • Strong communication, prioritization, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Compensation
  • Pay Range: $25-$32 per hour
