Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development or related field and two years of professional experience in early childhood programs or parenting education.

• Ability to work with diverse student populations and to support inclusive teaching practices.

Position Description

City College is proud to provide nationally recognized programs, offering a comprehensive curriculum and support services to open doors, open minds, and open arms to help transform students’ lives. The Child Development & Families Studies department invites applicants to join our efforts in preparing teachers and education professionals, and providing parent education and support services. Instructors are needed in the Non-Credit programs including: Child Development Lab Schools, Parent Participation Pre-K Cooperative, Child Observation classes, Family Resource Center, non credit courses and parent education to support students and parents.

Job Duties

1. Teach in-person noncredit courses to practicum students, parents, interns, field work students, student observers, assistants, and other adults at any of our campuses and in a variety of community locations. Programs include: child observation classes, lab schools, parent participation pre-k cooperative, family resource center and parent education that include young children (ages birth – 5 years).
2. Plan curriculum and organize the environment for parent education, practicum and lab aid students and laboratory child development settings for children.
3. Teach in-person day, evening, and/or Saturday classes at various campuses/sites as required, and be available to substitute as needed in a variety of non credit programs with varying schedules.
4. Create a student-centered classroom and lesson plans that reflect approved department course outlines.
5. Teach courses utilizing the Canvas Learning Management System (or college provided systems)
6. Perform duties associated with instructing and assessing student progress including, but not limited to: developing a syllabus, grading, designing written lesson plans, classroom activities, related assignments, and student learning outcome assessments. Knowledge of technology to complete reports and assessments needed.
7. Evaluate student performance and progress through in-class observation, assignments, and tests.
8. Provide opportunities for students to be aware of their progress.
9. Be available and accessible to students when necessary, including holding office hours.
10. Respond to student disciplinary issues and work with supervisor and other appropriate campus offices to ensure that student and faculty rights are respected.
11. Knowledge of program procedures and contracts related to Title 5 CDE funding and Title 22 CCL licensing. Perform duties related to coordination of Lab School practicum and lab aides, Child Observation courses, Parent Participation Pre-K Cooperatives and Family Resource Center in accordance to State and County requirements, Community Care Licensing and relevant requirements of the field.
12. For Lab Schools: Coordinate with Practicum Faculty, ECE Director and childcare centers to provide a positive learning environment for practicum students and lab aides. Knowledge of program improvement quality systems and elements of running a child care center in various settings.
13. Maintain a professional relationship with adults including office and center staff.
14. Support and engage in an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices as it relates to student success with an awareness of student equity gaps.
15. Participate in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism to center pedagogy.
16. Submit census, keep accurate enrollment and attendance reports, grades and student learning outcomes, including supporting documentation, by the published deadlines.
17. Maintain student confidentiality as required by regulation and Board Policy.
18. Participate in department functions such as attend meetings, curriculum development, course revisions and course assessments.
19. Keep abreast of current information, concepts, policies, laws and ideas in the field and with best practices in teaching and learning.
20. Support and engage in an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices as it relates to student success with an awareness of student equity gaps.
21. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds (Required).
2. Earned a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Family and Consumer Studies with a specialization in Child Development or Early Childhood Education, Educational Psychology with a specialization in Child Development, Elementary Education, Psychology, or Family Life Studies; AND two years of professional experience in early childhood programs or parenting education. OR Hold a fully-satisfied LIFE California Community College Instructor Credential in Nursing School and Pre‑School Education (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).
3. Hold a fully-satisfied LIFE California Community College Instructor Credential in Nursing School and Pre‑School Education (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

Desirable Qualifications

1. Experience planning, implementing, and supervising a child development program for Early Childhood students, parents and infant/toddler/preschool children.
2. Additional work in Child Development/Early Childhood Education beyond the Bachelor’s Degree.
3. Demonstrated ability to teach lower division lecture Child Development/Early Childhood Education courses.
4. Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to teach students who have challenging needs which require individual attention.
5. Community college teaching experience in an urban setting including working with practicum & work experience students.
6. Experience working with community-based service organizations.
7. Demonstrated ability to teach course work in specialty areas such as parent education, trauma informed care, special education and inclusion, bilingual education, childcare centers, parent participation pre‑k cooperatives, family resource centers and working with practicum and lab aide students.
8. Possess a current Program Director Level Child Development Permit from the California Commission on Teaching Credentials. Recent experience managing and overseeing a CDEV program in California.
9. Demonstrated knowledge of State Department of Education system in California, (for early education and K‑12 services) and experience administering a state subsidized child development center or working in a TK‑12 classroom in California.
10. Demonstrated familiarity with brain development theory and sensory motor learning.
11. Knowledge of health, safety and nutrition needs of children in group settings.
12. Evidence of successful instruction and leadership experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.
13. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
14. Demonstrated ability to speak Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish.
