Job summary

Armed Services YMCA is seeking a part-time Youth Program Assistant to direct activities for children in classrooms and to support curriculum implementation. You will help create engaging experiences that foster achievement and belonging, while ensuring safety and compliance with state regulations.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, 1 year of child care experience, and reliable transportation with a Texas driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Minimum of High School Diploma or GED.
• AA in ECE, ECD, Education & Teaching or CDA preferred.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Experience, minimum 1 year, working with children in a developmental setting.
• Experience planning, organizing, and implementing age- and developmentally appropriate activities.
• Any combination of education and work experience equivalent to the stated minimum requirements.
• Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and driving record.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers in developing and preparing plans outlining learning experiences and activities for a group of children.
• Implement the program to meet the needs, interests and capabilities of children per lesson plan.
• Ensure children's safety and know how to carry out emergency procedures.
• Attend parent-child events as necessary.
• Provide a neat, clean environment for all children, including snack/kitchen area, and monitor cleanup.
• Attend staff meetings and in-service training to meet Continuing Education requirements.
• Communicate with parents through the lead teacher and as required by the CDC Director.
• Assist with children during transitions and changes in the daily schedule.
• Work cooperatively with all staff and communicate directly; avoid gossip.
• Interact with children during snack, activities, and outdoor time.
• Maintain a clean, sanitary room and organized storage areas.
• Observe behavior and discuss unusual behaviors with the teacher or CDC Director.
• Demonstrate flexibility moving between groups as requested.
• Participate in special events, field trips, and programs.
• Familiarize with state regulations and Employee Handbook policies.

Basic Job Description

Provide direction for the children in the classroom and assist with the implementation of program curriculum. Provide quality experiences that focus on building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. This part-time position and starts at $11.50/hr.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assisting teachers in developing and preparing plans outlining learning experiences and activities for a group of children.
2. Implementing the program to meet the needs, special interests and capabilities of children and in accordance with the teacher's lesson plan.
3. Ensuring children's safety and knowing how to carry out emergency procedures when needed.
4. Attending parent-child events as necessary.
5. Providing a neat, clean environment for all children, including snack/kitchen area, and monitoring children's activities to ensure that children clean up after themselves.
6. Attending staff meetings and in-service training to meet the Continuing Education requirements established by the licensing office.
7. Communicating with parents through the lead teacher and as required by the CDC Director.
8. Assisting with children during transitional times and changes in the daily schedule.
9. Working cooperatively with all staff, communicating directly and avoiding gossip between employees.
10. Interacting with the children at all times, especially during snack time, group activity time and outdoor time.
11. Maintaining a clean, sanitary, and attractive room, including shelves, closets and drawers.
12. Observing behavior of children and discussing unusual behaviors with the teacher or CDC Director.
13. Demonstrating flexibility to move from one group of children to another when requested.
14. Participating in special events, field trips and special programs.
15. Becoming familiar with state regulations and inspections procedures, as well as policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
16. Supporting the program goals of the ASYMCA.
17. Assisting with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience

5. Previous experience planning, organizing, and implementing age- and developmentally appropriate activities.
6. Any combination of educational and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration of this position.
7. Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Agency's insurance carrier standards.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

1. Position is physically demanding and requires constant bending, stooping, and lifting (15lbs), as well as walking and standing; must be willing to assist in moving household items and furniture.
