Position Summary

This position provides direct supervision of children in licensed Before and Afterschool Enrichment or Early Learning programs. Assistant Teachers foster positive, nurturing relationships with children and build cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. They promote and support the potential of all youth and facilitate peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall child experience.

Essential Functions
  1. Child/Youth Growth & Development: Identify and respond to individual differences in personalities, temperaments, development, learning styles, and culture. Promote growth and development using appropriate services and resources.
  2. Learning Environments & Curriculum: Support developmentally appropriate learning environments and curriculum implementation. Provide engaging, safe, and inclusive environments that encourage exploration and learning. Guide children in expressing feelings and interacting positively with others. Support diverse needs, abilities, and interests.
  3. Observation & Assessment: Recognize individual development paces, maintain confidentiality, and assist in collecting information about growth, development, and learning.
  4. Interactions with Youth: Create supportive environments for learning and practicing appropriate behaviors. Offer individual guidance using suitable methods and resources.
  5. Youth Engagement: Encourage active participation, develop relationships respecting cultural and ability differences, foster critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, and goal-setting skills. Maintain appropriate boundaries and value cultural differences.
  6. Family Engagement: Communicate respectfully with families from diverse backgrounds, develop positive relationships, and contribute to strong partnerships between the school and program.
  7. Safety & Wellness: Follow health and safety policies, report suspected abuse, respond effectively to crises, recognize safe environments, and support healthy eating practices.
  8. Program Planning: Support and implement weekly lesson plans.
  9. Professional Development & Leadership: Promote professionalism, improve teaching through good work habits, and perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Experience: One year working with children in a licensed child care setting preferred. Experience with diverse populations is a plus.

Certifications: CPR and First Aid certifications and safety training required within 30 days of hire. Must be at least 18 years old.

Skills & Knowledge: Commitment to YMCA values, ability to work with diverse backgrounds, and willingness to be a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs, perform frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and bending. Ability to perceive sounds, communicate effectively, and perform activities requiring visual acuity.

Work Environment

Occasional travel to other locations, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and maintain a clean, safe environment. Work involves moderate to noisy settings, including office and outdoor environments.
