ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic mental illnesses in children and adolescent patients through direct patient care or consultation services.
  • Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized treatment plans, and implements treatment plan for the child patient through evaluation, diagnosis of children with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), hospitalization, and/or medication management.
  • Provides medical care and preventive services to patients, including guidance in nutrition, common illnesses, accidents, growth, and development. Provides nursing functions such as measurement and interpretation of vital signs, lab results and administration of intra-venous medications, monitors patient’s response to drug therapy, and provides education on medication interaction.
  • Maintains knowledge and proficiency in medical practices through continuing education, staff meetings, workshops, and home study.
  • Be available for stand-by, call back and on call rotation schedule when needed for crisis or any other psychiatric needs in the adolescent care unit (ACU) as assigned by the Chief of Behavioral Health services.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance Improvement Performance (QAPI) review processes.
  • Provides consultation services and coordination of clinical care with the multi-disciplinary treatment team.
  • Provides supportive therapy, counseling and guidance to individuals, families, and groups. Conducts history and physical examination of patients, assesses physical condition, and orders various tests (e.g., laboratory, neurological, and psychological tests).
  • Where necessary, provides case management functions; provides short or long-term psychotherapy; prescribes psychotropic medications and supervises medication maintenance by evaluation of the patient's response to drug therapy and determines continuing medication regime in consultation with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in treatment and discharge planning meetings with interdisciplinary team members.
  • Performs rounding on admitted patients for on-going medication management at least twice a week and/or sometimes daily or as needed depending on patient’s plan of care needs.
  • Communicates with other staff as necessary to ensure coordination and follow-through for the child patient who may also be receiving primary care services.
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary meetings, medical staff meetings, and other professional committees. Offers guidance and support to patients, families, and the inter-disciplinary team.
  • When necessary, supervise physician assistant (PA), certified nurse practitioner (NP) and/or students, interns, or residents.
  • May be required to sit in on the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) meetings as department chair or as delegated by the Chief of Behavioral Health.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • At least one year of experience in psychiatric care in an inpatient or outpatient setting as a resident or staff physician.

Education:

  • Completion of Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy (MD/DO) from an accredited University.
  • Completion of an accredited-ACGME residency program in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry and/or Adult Psychiatry.

License/ Certifications:

  • Must be Board Certified (BC) or Board Eligible (BE) by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
  • Must hold a current license to practice in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Must have a current, valid, unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) License.
  • CPR/First Aid certified.
