Job summary

AAHA is seeking a part-time, remote Editor-in-Chief for JAAHA, the journal of the American Animal Hospital Association and ABVP. The role directs scientific rigor and editorial integrity, shaping content strategy and engagement with authors and reviewers.

The successful candidate holds a DVM or equivalent degree, with preferred board certification and substantial experience in scholarly publishing. Start date December 2026–January 2027, with 0.2 FTE commitment and quarterly compensation.

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent veterinary degree required; advanced training and/or board certification preferred.
• Significant experience in clinical practice, academic medicine, research, or scholarly publishing.
• Prior editorial experience (editor-in-chief, associate editor, or similar role) strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated understanding of peer review, research methodology, and evidence-based medicine.
• Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
• Familiarity with a manuscript management system (Editorial Manager, ScholarOne, or JAAHA platform) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serves as the senior editorial leader for JAAHA, providing strategic, scientific, and editorial direction.
• Oversees the journal's editorial vision, scope, and priorities, guiding content strategy to align with AAHA's mission.
• Identifies emerging trends and research areas relevant to clinical veterinary medicine and collaborates on long-term strategy.
• Holds final authority over acceptance, revision, or rejection of manuscripts.
• Ensures a fair, timely, unbiased, and rigorous peer-review process with the managing editor.
• Recruits, appoints, and mentors section editors and peer reviewers; defines roles and expectations.
• Ensures compliance with scientific integrity, authorship, conflicts of interest, and ethics.
