Job summary

Valdosta Police Department seeks a senior IT leader to direct the city’s information technology operations and services for the Mayor, Council, city management, and all city offices. You will drive strategic initiatives to deliver secure, reliable, and cost-efficient IT solutions aligned with city goals.

Responsibilities include budgeting, purchasing oversight, vendor management, and vendor risk assessments, plus leading staff, policy development, cybersecurity, and IT architecture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience with IT budgeting and purchasing processes.
  • Five+ years of related IT leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of information security and cyber security principles.
  • Experience coordinating with multiple city departments and leadership.

  • Researches, evaluates, and purchases hardware and software; presents recommendations to City Manager and M&C.
  • Manages vendors, contractors, and service providers, including cost control and contract negotiations.
  • Develops, presents, and implements IT policies and procedures for the city.
  • Implements and manages IT systems and security across the organization.
  • Provides top-tier support for help desk, network, and server administration.

Description

This position directs the city’s information technology operations and services.

  • Directs information technology department operations to deliver technology services to the Mayor and Council, all elected city offices, city management, and city departments.
  • Plans and implements strategies to deliver cost-efficient, effective, secure, and reliable IT services that meet the city’s overall goals, business objectives, and long- and short-term strategies.
  • Develops and oversees IT budgets and monitors all technology purchases through the city.
  • Consults with department heads and the City Manager to identify technology needs and solutions.
  • Hires, trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
  • Provides direction for the IT Department, as related to strategic planning, product standardization, product identification, and IT architecture, engineering, and design.
  • Provides direction for city cyber-security operations.
  • Researches, evaluates, and purchases hardware and software; presents recommendation to the City Manager and M&C as necessary.
  • Manages and oversees vendors, contractors, and service providers, including vendor selection, cost control, vendor security assessments, and contract negotiations.
  • Develops, presents, and implements IT policies and procedures for the city.
  • Implements, monitors, and manages systems and solutions at all levels, including IT security.
  • Provides top tier support for help desk, network administration, and server administration functions.

Requirements
  • Knowledge of the principles uses in analyzing, evaluating, modifying, installing, maintaining, expanding, networking, and testing information systems and technology.
  • Knowledge of the information technology needs of the city government and its departments.
  • Knowledge of budget management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of personnel management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge contract management principles.
  • Knowledge of information security and assurance principles.
  • Skill in developing and implement IT strategies to meet the need of a complex organization.

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require five or more years of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Salary Description
