Job description

The Undersea Systems and Acoustics (USA) Group in the STR Sensors Division develops and delivers advanced undersea sensor and information processing systems centered on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and counter-ISR missions. We build low size, weight, and power (SWAP) distributed systems and uncrewed autonomous systems. We differentiate these systems by developing and deploying advanced algorithms and novel hardware designs. Software development ranges from ideation to prototype implementations with real-time embedded processing.

The Role:

The USA Group is seeking a Chief Scientist to define, grow, and implement a portfolio of processing capabilities focused on future undersea warfare systems. You will seek to understand customer objectives, craft strategic plans, lead proposal efforts, and work to grow and maintain the core signal processing competency within USA. You will also lead and advise fellow researchers, scientists, and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams spread across multiple STR campuses. Your responsibilities will include innovating and developing advanced subsea, seabed, and acoustic warfare concepts and processing capabilities.

A successful candidate will have substantial knowledge and expertise in several of the following areas: statistical signal processing, array signal processing, ML/AI, tracking, data fusion, optimization, adaptive signal processing, digital signal processing, information theory, and have substantial experience applying and implementing information processing techniques to solve real-world problems. Strong technical, interpersonal, communication, and technical leadership skills are expected.

What you will do:

  • Technical leadership
    • Set a vision for, shape, and grow the Group’s information processing portfolio
    • Interface with customers on execution, needs, and future vision driving business development in signal processing areas
    • Formulate and propose technical solutions (algorithms, approaches, etc.) accounting the goals and objectives of our customers and other constraints
    • Articulate and communicate those solutions to junior engineers, Group and Division management, and to customers
    • Technically execute on projects tackling the harder problems, guiding others, and/or anticipating problems that need to be solved to achieve project objectives
    • Stay abreast of state-of-the-art processing techniques and seek advancements in other fields that could potentially impact undersea processing applications
    • Write and present technical presentations and reports
    • Mentor junior staff

Who you are:

  • MS or PhD in a science related degree field (Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, Computer Science, Physics, etc.) with 10 - 13+ years of experience depending on degree
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance, for which U.S citizenship is needed by the U.S government
  • Strong signal and information processing expertise (statistical signal processing, array processing, signal modeling, linear algebra, probability and random processes, optimization, tracking/data fusion, adaptive signal processing, digital signal processing, information theory)
  • Experience designing, implementing, and analyzing ML/AI algorithms
  • Experience with sonar processing chains, undersea systems, and undersea acoustics
  • Strong programming skills (especially C++, MATLAB and/or python)
  • 6+ years of technical project leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing with DoD customers and securing funding through marketing and proposal efforts to support a team
  • Robust sense of initiative, a self-starter who can work independently
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work directly with customers
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Mission oriented with a strong ability contribute to team goals and work in a team environment to deliver real world results

Even Better:

  • Experience interacting with U.S. Navy and other U.S. Government organizations and processes

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way.
