Chief Sanitarian
- Administers the enforcement programs for the food service (TFER), general sanitation, OSSF and public health programs.
- Provides first level of supervision and coordination to Assistant Chief Sanitarian, Sanitarians, Code Inspectors and OSSF Inspectors.
- Responsible for the planning, organizing, supervising, managing, reviewing and evaluating the work of groups and services. Assigns duties, determines work schedules, work product/process, authorizes leaves, performs performance evaluation, conducts training, problem resolution, makes hiring decisions and disciplinary decisions up to and including termination, subject to review. Trains supervised employees to the standards of the Department.
- Responds to, investigates and resolves complaints from the public concerning personnel.
- Conducts field audits of own work group and when needed and/or the work of subordinates to ensure quality inspections of food service establishments, OSSF and general sanitation complaints. Reviews work of others for quality control, safety and quantity.
- Responds to accidents and other safety issues for work group; develops and maintains safety program for work group.
- Conducts new employee orientation in the department. Conducts field training and continuing education requirements for department. Conducts public relations training courses to various entities in the county.
- Participates and establishes standards and participates in short and long range planning for related operations; assists with development of departmental strategic planning.
- Monitors pending legislation to determine any potential impacts to environmental health services; Works with Director to analyze and consider solutions.
- Evaluates conditions/situations and makes decision for course of action on special projects or problems.
- Acts as liaison between various county departments, government officials, representatives of business or community organizations, the public and all level of county personnel regarding matters and/or complaints, inspections and investigations.
- Tracks employee activity and responsible for the GPS tracking reports.
- Responsible for the preparation, planning and implementation for the Departmental Emergency Preparedness Plan. Responds to and coordinates department resources for emergency events or requests and participates in activities as appropriate such as committees, trainings, drills and exercises.
- Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
- Bachelor’s degree in science from an accredited University, with at least 30 semester hours of natural sciences.
- Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills; strong management, interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public; other employees and elected officials. Knowledge of Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER); On-Site Sewerage Facility (OSSF) Rules; Texas Statutes and Health and Safety Code.
- Certification as a Registered Professional Sanitarian in the State of Texas required. On-site Sewerage Facility (OSSF) TCEQ Designated Representative Required; OSSF TCEQ Site Evaluator Certification preferred but not required. Bilingual preferred but not required.
SALARY: $35.42-MIN to $53.13-MAX/HOURLY
