Job description

Description

Kitchens for Good
POSITION TITLE: Chief Revenue Officer (CRO)
REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
COMPENSATION: $165,000 – $185,000, plus eligibility for an annual performance-based bonus
LOCATION: San Diego, CA; on-site at KFG enterprise sites with local travel
Who we are:

Kitchens for Good (KFG) is a San Diego nonprofit, employment social enterprise whose mission is to drive economic mobility through food. KFG runs culinary career and food entrepreneur development programs that intertwine with a robust portfolio of earned-revenue businesses, including meal contracts, catering, retail, resale, and ecommerce. These enterprises annually generate $4.5M in revenue that sustains the organization and serve as real-world job training grounds and sales channels for motivated individuals who have historically lacked employment and business ownership opportunities.

Position Overview:

The Chief Revenue Officer is a member of Kitchens for Good’s Executive Leadership Team and is responsible for the financial performance and growth of KFG’s social enterprise portfolio. They will work in tandem with the CEO to create the strategy and benchmarks needed to grow revenue from $4.5M to $30M over the next ten years while providing hundreds of job seekers and early-stage food entrepreneurs with wealth-generating opportunities.

The CRO must be equally comfortable with strategy and execution: developing multi-year growth plans, reviewing P&Ls, negotiating major business opportunities, coaching enterprise leaders, improving operational systems, and ensuring that KFG’s businesses remain both commercially competitive and deeply aligned with the organization’s mission.

Enterprise Portfolio:

The CRO provides executive oversight of KFG’s portfolio of social enterprises, including:

  • Nutrition Services: High-volume, scratch‑made meal production for government agencies, schools, nonprofits, and institutional partners
  • Shared Kitchens (in development): Commercial kitchen access, production infrastructure, and related services for food entrepreneurs and businesses
  • Market Café (in development): A public‑facing food enterprise that provides training, employment, market access, and community connection
  • SHOP and E‑commerce: Retail and online sales of donated kitchenware, locally made food products, and other mission‑aligned merchandise
  • Culinary Experiences: Classes, corporate team building, and events

The portfolio will evolve, and the CRO is responsible for evaluating, developing, and launching new opportunities, as well as recommending the restructuring or discontinuation of others based on financial performance, mission impact, market opportunity, and organizational capacity.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Financial Performance and Enterprise Accountability:
  • Be accountable for the financial performance of KFG’s social enterprise portfolio
  • Establish and manage annual revenue, margin, and profitability targets
  • Analyze enterprise P&Ls, budgets, forecasts, cash requirements, pricing, cost structures, and performance trends
  • Practice open book management
  • Collaboratively develop and implement corrective plans when businesses fall below financial expectations
  • Identify opportunities to improve margins through pricing, procurement, labor management, capacity utilization, Lean process improvement, and economies of scale
  • Build a culture in which mission impact and financial discipline are viewed as mutually reinforcing
Revenue Growth and Business Development:
  • Oversee strategies to grow enterprise revenue to $30M over the next ten years
  • Build and steward relationships with prospective clients
  • Lead major contract negotiations, business partnerships, and high‑value revenue opportunities
  • Establish disciplined sales pipelines, revenue forecasts, customer retention strategies, and business development processes
  • Evaluate new business opportunities using clear financial, operational, capacity, and mission criteria
  • Strengthen cross‑selling, collaboration, and operating efficiencies across KFG’s enterprise portfolio
  • Represent KFG externally as a leader in employment social enterprise, workforce development, food systems, and inclusive economic growth
Mission Integration and Social Enterprise Impact:
  • Ensure KFG’s social enterprises effectively advance the organization’s mission to drive economic mobility through food
  • Integrate job seekers and entrepreneurs into KFG’s businesses in ways that support economic mobility and enterprise performance
  • Ensure all KFG enterprises provide paid on‑the‑job training for job seekers and market access for entrepreneurs
  • Develop clear expectations and systems for balancing commercial performance with KFG’s social impact goals
  • Identify new ways for KFG’s enterprises to expand economic opportunity for people who have historically faced barriers to employment and business ownership
  • Define and measure the social return generated by KFG’s enterprise portfolio
Leadership and Talent Development:
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability to the directors and managers responsible for KFG’s social enterprises
  • Establish clear roles, decision rights, goals, and accountability
  • Develop the business and financial acumen of enterprise leaders
  • Establish succession plans and leadership pipelines for key enterprise positions
  • Steward a culture of unreasonable hospitality, ownership, accountability, innovation, collaboration, job seeker development, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure enterprise leaders have freedom within a framework: a high level of autonomy while operating within KFG‑wide strategies, standards, and financial expectations
Executive Leadership and Organizational Management:
  • Engage as a proactive member of KFG’s Executive Leadership Team
  • Participate in organization‑wide strategic planning, budgeting, risk management, and decision‑making, as well as KFG events
  • Provide clear, concise reporting on enterprise performance, opportunities, risks, and corrective actions
  • Present enterprise strategy and performance information to KFG’s Board of Directors and committees as requested
  • Model KFG’s values and contribute to a culture of transparency, accountability, collaboration, and high performance
  • Identify ways to add more value to KFG
Requirements
Education & Work Experience:

  • Strong data literacy: collecting, analyzing, projecting outcomes, proactively identifying issues, and reporting results
  • Clear, persuasive communication with program participants, executives, boards, customers, and team members
  • Demonstrated experience using AI to drive efficiencies and maximize customer experience
Preferred:
  • Shared lived experiences
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Nonprofit leadership experience
  • Lean Six Sigma and EOS proficiency
Competencies:
  • Business and financial acumen: Understands the drivers of revenue, margin, and cash, and uses data to make sound decisions.
  • Strategic thinking: Sets long‑range direction for a portfolio while balancing near‑term performance.
  • Mission‑driven leadership: Treats social impact and financial discipline as mutually reinforcing goals.
  • Accountability and results: Sets clear expectations, tracks performance, and acts quickly when results fall short.
  • Talent development: Coaches leaders, builds bench strength, and delegates with appropriate autonomy.
  • Relationship building and influence: Earns trust with customers, partners, funders, and internal teams.
  • Collaboration: Works across programs, finance, development, and People and Culture toward shared goals.
  • Equity and inclusion: Builds workplaces where people with diverse backgrounds and lived experience can succeed.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Has a proven track record
  • Can talk margins, ROI, COGS, and KPIs and work collaboratively with entrepreneurs to improve services
  • Brings both strategic vision and the operating discipline to execute it
  • Has made hard calls to fix, restructure, or stop something that led to significantly improved outcomes
  • Grows leaders who own their numbers, rather than running every business themselves
