Chief Quality Officer

WVU School of Medicine seeks a Chief Quality Officer for WVU Hospitals/University Health Associates. This leadership role is ideal for a physician committed to clinical excellence, education, and research.

Summary

The CQO directs quality, patient safety, and patient experience programs across WVU Hospitals. Responsibilities include developing guidelines, implementing standards, re-engineering care pathways, and fostering continuous quality improvement. The CQO acts as a bridge between hospital quality efforts and system-wide initiatives, collaborating to develop a value-based care model.

Time Allocation

80% administrative, 20% clinical effort.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and leadership in quality programs, collaborating with the System CQO.
  • Chair the WVUH Quality Executive Council and develop quality and safety data guidelines.
  • Lead, teach, motivate, and assist in clinical quality and safety initiatives.
  • Implement innovative initiatives to improve clinical quality and patient safety.
  • Enhance real-time reporting of quality metrics to leadership.
  • Develop strategies to overcome implementation barriers.
  • Develop policies related to quality and safety standards.
  • Maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Oversee activities to improve Patient Experience.
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Develop metrics for provider performance evaluation.
  • Manage budgets and expenses.
  • Coordinate with other groups implementing WVU Hospital strategies.
  • Communicate quality and safety strategies externally.
  • Ensure consistent implementation across WVU Hospitals.
  • Improve external benchmarking performance.
  • Collaborate on quality initiatives with physician groups and service lines.
  • Lead continuous improvement and foster a culture of excellence.
  • Engage with leaders and clinicians to build quality and safety.
  • Evaluate care delivery and develop improvement infrastructure.
  • Strengthen data and information capabilities.
  • Lead educational programs in clinical quality and safety.
  • Participate in scholarship and dissemination of research.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership.
  • Maintain active clinical practice and certification.

Minimum Qualifications
  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certification by ABMS or AOA.
  • West Virginia medical license or ability to obtain.
  • Active clinical privileges at WVU Hospitals before start.
  • Five years post-training clinical experience.
  • Three years in quality and patient safety.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in clinical quality, epidemiology, or patient safety; advanced degrees (MPH, MBA, MHA).
  • Experience in an academic medical center.
