Job summary

The South Dakota Historical Society Foundation is a nonprofit organization and the fundraising partner of the South Dakota State Historical Society. The Chief Executive Officer will lead philanthropy, governance, and long-term sustainability, reporting to the Board of Directors.

This role will drive strategy, endowment planning, and stakeholder engagement across South Dakota. The CEO may reside anywhere in South Dakota and travel statewide, with a preference for residency in the Pierre area.

Qualifications

• Proven executive leadership experience in nonprofit/philanthropy.
• Strong relationship-building and donor cultivation skills.
• Commitment to South Dakota history and philanthropy.

Responsibilities

• Identify philanthropic opportunities and advance fundraising priorities with the Board.
• Cultivate and solicit leadership gifts from donors.
• Oversee budgeting, financial planning, and investment oversight with the finance committee.
• Maintain internal controls and financial oversight in line with nonprofit best practices.
• Lead Heritage Stores and Badger Hole operations including marketing and revenue generation.
• Strengthen membership and public awareness for the Foundation's mission.
• Recruit, develop, supervise, and evaluate Foundation staff.
• Serve as spokesperson and ambassador for the Foundation.
