Description:

Duties: Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Parks & Environmental Services, the Chief of Park Police is responsible for:

  1. Directing and supervising all personnel and activities of the Peoria Park District Police Department and Recreational Security staff in accordance with all applicable laws and ordinances.
  2. Developing and maintaining relationships with other departments and agencies.
  3. Coordinating training for all Park Police officers to meet Illinois standards.
  4. Supervising the Manager of Recreation Security.
  5. Establishing patrol schedules and supporting special events.
  6. Conducting annual performance evaluations.
  7. Managing payroll records and maintaining SOPs.
  8. Reporting crime statistics to authorities.
  9. Investigating citizen complaints to ensure integrity and professionalism.
  10. Providing safety training to staff outside of law enforcement.
  11. Maintaining security records and reports.
  12. Implementing policies and regulations.
  13. Collaborating with public agencies on law enforcement programs.
  14. Creating and presenting activity reports.
  15. Participating in board and committee meetings.
  16. Assisting in budget preparation.
  17. Final employee selection in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  18. Engaging in patrol functions as needed.
  19. Overseeing activity related to the shooting range.
  20. Following safety procedures and supporting safety programs.
  21. Performing other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:

Must be in excellent physical and mental health, capable of passing physical exams, and able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or related field preferred; extensive experience may substitute.

Experience:

Minimum of five years in law enforcement with three years in supervision.

Certification:
  • Police Officer Certification by Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Officers Training & Standards Board.
  • Completion of recognized First Line Police Supervisory course.
  • Experience as a Field Training Officer.
  • CPR/AED and first aid certification.
Knowledge and Ability:
  • Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and community relations.
  • Understanding of safety laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of Park District goals and standards.
  • Professionalism, integrity, and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to give and follow instructions.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and equipment.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license.
  • Community policing philosophy.
  • Administrative creativity and cooperation skills.
