Job summary

MUSC Health seeks a Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) to lead the strategy, governance, and optimization of nursing-focused clinical information systems across its academic health system. This leader partners with the CMIO and Nursing leadership to ensure voice of nursing drives Epic EHR design, adoption, and continuous improvement across 16 hospitals, 750+ care locations, and statewide telehealth.

Qualifications

  • Current RN licensure with eligibility for SC.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required; master's preferred.
  • 7–10 years of progressive nursing leadership, including 5+ years in clinical informatics leadership.
  • Deep experience with Epic implementation and optimization; certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise-scale EHR governance, clinical workflow redesign, and technology adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy, governance, and optimization of clinical information systems supporting nursing practice and interprofessional care.
  • Partner with CMIO and Nursing leadership to align technology with nursing care delivery and outcomes.

Job Description Summary

The Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) is the senior nursing executive responsible for the strategy, governance, and optimization of clinical information systems and digital technologies that support nursing practice and interprofessional care across MUSC Health, South Carolina's only comprehensive academic health system. Serving as the dyad partner to the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO), the CNIO ensures the voice of nursing shapes the design, adoption, and continuous improvement of the Epic electronic health record and related technologies across MUSC Health's 16 hospitals, 750+ care locations, and statewide telehealth network.

The CNIO bridges clinical operations, information solutions, and academic missions — partnering with the Chief Nurse Executive, CMIO, Chief Information Officer, and the MUSC College of Nursing to advance safe, efficient, evidence-based, technology-enabled care.

Required Education/Skills/Work Experience/Licensure
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current RN licensure, with eligibility for licensure in South Carolina.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required; master's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Seven to ten years of progressive nursing leadership experience, including at least five years in clinical informatics leadership within a complex, multi-hospital health system.
  • Deep experience with Epic implementation and optimization; Epic certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise-scale EHR governance, clinical workflow redesign, and technology adoption.

  • Experience in an academic health system spanning clinical, educational, and research missions.
  • Executive presence and ability to influence across a matrixed, geographically distributed organization.
  • Active engagement in professional organizations (e.g., ANIA, AMIA, HIMSS, AONL).
