Job summary

MEMPHIS LIGHT GAS & WATER seeks a Chief Meteorologist to serve as the enterprise authority on weather intelligence, integrating meteorology into utility operations, safety, executive decision-making, and emergency preparedness.

You will develop forecasts, prepare dashboards and briefings, and communicate with executives and the public, coordinating with federal and regional agencies for storm response and climate planning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climatology, Environmental Science or related field.
• Four to seven years of progressively responsible forecasting experience.
• Excellent written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to executive and public audiences.
• Must successfully complete NIMS training within one year of entering the job.
• Proficiency with NOAA, NWS, HRRR, GFS, ECMWF, SPC, WPC, NHC, Doppler radar, satellite imagery, ensemble models, OMS, GIS, SCADA, ADMS, EMS, DMS, AMI, vegetation and asset management systems, Microsoft 365, Power BI, Tableau, ArcGIS, and AI-assisted forecasting tools.

Responsibilities

• Monitor evolving atmospheric conditions.
• Develop operational and seasonal forecasts.
• Produce executive weather briefings.
• Translate meteorological data into actionable business intelligence.
• Support Outage Management, System Operations, Electric, Gas, Water, Engineering and Vegetation Management.
• Provide weather intelligence for storm preparation, restoration planning, damage prediction and resource staging.
• Provide guidance on heat, cold, lightning, flooding, air quality, fatigue mitigation, hydration and outdoor work scheduling.
• Prepare executive dashboards, seasonal outlooks, storm briefings and risk assessments.
• Serve as MLGW's official weather spokesperson.
• Produce studio-based weather briefings, preparedness videos, media interviews and customer education.
• Support web, social media, Customer messaging (Convey), email, SMS and future digital channels.
• Participate in Emergency Operations Center and Incident Command activities.
• Coordinate with NWS, TVA, FEMA, TEMA, Shelby County and peer utilities.
• Support load forecasting, revenue forecasting, weather normalization and long-range climate planning.
• Evaluate AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, and emerging weather technologies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB PURPOSE

The Chief Meteorologist serves as MLGW's enterprise authority on weather intelligence, integrating advanced meteorological science into utility operations, workforce safety, executive decision-making, Customer communications, and emergency preparedness. Anticipate weather-related risks before they become operational challenges by providing accurate, timely, and actionable weather intelligence that enables MLGW to protect employees, improve system reliability, strengthen Customer trust, and support strategic decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Must have a valid driver's license from the state of residence.
• Preferred: Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) and/or Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM).

EDUCATION

• Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climatology, Environmental Science or related field.

EXPERIENCE

• Four (4) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible forecasting experience.
• Excellent written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to executive and public audiences.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Must successfully complete NIMS training within one year of entering the job. Proficiency with NOAA, NWS, HRRR, GFS, ECMWF, SPC, WPC, NHC, Doppler radar, satellite imagery, ensemble models, OMS, GIS, SCADA, ADMS, EMS, DMS, AMI, vegetation and asset management systems, Microsoft 365, Power BI, Tableau, ArcGIS, and AI-assisted forecasting tools. Work is performed primarily in an office with occasional travel to field locations, Emergency Operation Centers, and public events. Requires prolonged sitting, standing, and computer use. Must be available for extended hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments during severe weather and emergencies. Occasional outdoor work may involve adverse weather and lifting up to 25 pounds.
