Job Duties

This position will serve as Chief Medical Officer of Piedmont Geriatric Hospital (PGH), supervising and coordinating all activities of the Medical Staff of PGH. Ensure that policies, procedures, and outcomes of health care activities inclusive of departments supervised comply with regulatory, legal, and medical standards.

Piedmont Geriatric Hospital is located in Nottoway County in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is the only facility operated by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services solely dedicated to the Psychiatric evaluation and treatment of older adults (aged 65 and older). The mission of the facility is to provide recovery-based mental health services to enable patients to thrive in the community. Treatment focuses on assisting patients to improve and/or maintain their physical, mental, and social functioning so that they can be discharged to a less restrictive setting.

  • Broad base of experience and comprehensive knowledge of inpatient psychiatry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary psychiatric treatment practices as well as management principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise medical staff.
  • Ability to develop goals and objectives, evaluate program effectiveness, and interpret governing directives.
  • Working knowledge of performance improvement and utilization review functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with hospital leadership and function as part of interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to analyze a complex health care delivery system and provide general oversight to clinical outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate vision and mission into operating standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree and completion of an accredited psychiatry residency training program.
  • Current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certificated.
  • Initial Board Certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

Additional Considerations

  • Clinical experience in hospital psychiatry with some familiarity with forensic psychiatry.
  • Past administrative experience in hospital psychiatry.
  • Experience supervising non-clinical departments.
