Job description

Chief Medical Officer (Physician – MD or DO)

Rural Oregon | Leadership + Clinical Practice | Confidential Search

The Opportunity

Imagine practicing medicine where your voice truly matters — where leadership is visible, decisions are made locally, and the impact of your work is felt immediately by patients, providers, and the broader community.

A progressive rural healthcare organization in Oregon is seeking a physician leader to serve as its next Chief Medical Officer. This is a rare opportunity to combine executive-level leadership with an active clinical practice in one of Oregon’s most scenic and authentic rural regions.

You will join a close-knit, mission-driven organization that values collaboration, innovation, and high-quality care — not bureaucracy.

Your Role as Chief Medical Officer

As CMO, you will serve as both a strategic leader and trusted clinical voice, partnering closely with the CEO and senior leadership team to shape the future of care delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Championing the alignment of physicians and advanced practice providers with the organization’s mission, vision, and values

  • Leading clinical quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives
  • Driving evidence-based care standards and best practices across clinical departments
  • Strengthening patient experience and HCAHPS outcomes
  • Serving as a physician advisor for utilization management and case review
  • Supporting medical staff leadership, committees, and physician governance
  • Acting as a key liaison between providers, administration, the Board, and the community
  • Mentoring physician leaders and fostering a culture of collegiality and engagement
  • Partnering on physician recruitment and retention efforts
  • Supporting regulatory compliance and accreditation standards
  • Collaborating on population health strategies tailored to a rural community

This is a role for a physician who enjoys building consensus, leading change, and maintaining a strong connection to patient care.

Balanced Schedule
  • 50% Administrative Leadership
Executive CMO responsibilities as a member of the senior leadership team

  • 50% Clinical Practice
Maintain hands-on clinical work within your specialty, ensuring credibility, connection, and fulfillment

Compensation & Benefits
  • Highly competitive salary
  • Robust retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Generous CME allowance and paid CME time
  • Student loan repayment opportunities (including federal and internal programs)
  • A true work‑life balance that is increasingly rare in healthcare leadership
Ideal Candidate
  • MD or DO with (or eligible for) Oregon medical licensure
  • Board certified or board eligible
  • Clinical leadership experience strongly preferred (formal titles not required)
  • Passion for rural healthcare and community-based medicine
  • Commitment to collaborative, high‑quality, patient‑centered care
Why Rural Oregon?

This role is located in a spectacularly beautiful region of rural Oregon, offering wide‑open spaces, clean air, and a pace of life that allows you to truly enjoy your surroundings.

Think:

  • Mountain views and river valleys
  • Endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, and outdoor adventure
  • A welcoming, tight‑knit community where physicians are deeply respected
  • A chance to practice medicine the way it was meant to be practiced

This is not just a job — it’s a lifestyle and legacy opportunity.
