Family Health Centers seeks a Chief Medical Officer to provide executive clinical leadership across locations, guiding patient-centered care, quality, access, and efficiency. The CMO partners with the CEO, leads medical staff, and drives performance, regulatory compliance, and population health initiatives.
Requirements include an MD/DO and 5+ years in clinical leadership, with preferred FQHC/community health experience.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the senior physician executive responsible for the leadership, performance, quality and delivery of medical services across Family Health Centers. The CMO partners closely with the CEO and executive team to advance the mission of Family Health Centers. As a member of the executive leadership team, the CMO provides strategic and hands-on clinical leadership to advance high-quality, patient-centered care, provider performance, patient access, and clinical efficiency. The role leads and develops the medical provider team, establishes accountability for clinical and productivity expectations, and partners closely with operational leadership to identify and address barriers to effective care delivery. The CMO works collaboratively across medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, quality, risk, and compliance functions to advance integrated care, population health, regulatory compliance, and operational goals. Through visible leadership across FHC locations, data-driven decision making, and responsible stewardship of clinical resources, the CMO supports excellent patient outcomes and the long-term financial sustainability of Family Health Centers.
Directly supervises the medical provider team, offering ongoing on-site support at each FHC location.
Provide executive-level clinical leadership and strategic direction for medical services across all Family Health Centers locations, including regular on-site provider and care team support.
Serve as a senior physician leader for FHC, providing leadership, oversight, mentorship, and accountability for medical providers of all scopes and licensure levels.
Promote a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, culturally competent patient-centered care, teamwork, continuous improvement, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
Establish, monitor, and drive achievement of provider and care-team productivity, patient access, and clinical performance expectations necessary to support high-quality care and financial sustainability.
Partner closely with the COO and operational leadership to evaluate provider capacity, scheduling, patient flow, staffing models, workflows, and other factors affecting access, productivity, and efficient care delivery.
Analyze provider and site-level performance data to identify barriers and opportunities for improvement and develop measurable action plans to improve quality, productivity, access, and clinical efficiency.
Maintain visible leadership presence across FHC locations, regularly working alongside providers and care teams to understand site-specific clinical and operational challenges and opportunities.
Provide direct, hands-on coaching and mentorship to providers, including on-site observation and shadowing when appropriate, to improve quality, clinical practice, productivity, documentation, time-management, patient flow, panel management, and overall performance.
Hold medical providers accountable for established quality metrics, productivity, access, documentation, and professional performance expectations and, in partnership with HR and operational leadership, implement performance improvement or corrective action when needed.
Lead the development, review, implementation, and standardization of evidence-based clinical policies, protocols, standards of care, and medical practice expectations throughout the medical department.
Provide physician-level clinical oversight, consultation, review, and supervision where required by provider scope of practice, including required formal supervision of Physician Assistants.
Serve as the primary clinical reviewer and approver for all credentialing and privileging activities, consistent with the authority delegated by the Board to the CEO to designate internal clinical experts.
Provide clinical consultation and leadership regarding complex, high-risk, or unusual patient-care matters and support appropriate escalation and clinical decision-making.
Partner closely with the Chief Quality and Compliance Officer to advance clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, population health, and measurable improvement in patient outcomes.
Provide medical leadership and provider engagement for population health initiatives, preventative care, chronic disease management, care-gap closure, and other organization-wide clinical improvement priorities. Including, leading early adoption of FHCs innovations in practice and technology.
Support and advance FHC’s Patient-Centered Medical Home status to ensure providers and care teams effectively utilize team-based care, care coordination, panel management, and other PCMH principles.
Ensure medical staff services and provider practices support compliance with HRSA requirements, FTCA deeming requirements, The Joint Commission accreditation standards, applicable federal and state regulations, accepted cannons of medical scope, and other clinical and regulatory requirements.
Champion integration and coordination among medical, behavioral health, pharmacy, and dental services, partnering with respective clinical and operational leaders to strengthen whole-person care, communication, referrals, and continuity of care, including partnership with Advance as appropriate.
Ensure providers maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation and coding practices that support quality patient care, continuity, compliance, and appropriate reimbursement.
Partner with HR and operational leadership in provider recruitment, selection, onboarding, performance management, succession planning, and retention.
Promote provider engagement and professional development through regular communication, mentoring, education, feedback, and opportunities for medical staff participation in organizational improvement.
Participate in organizational planning, budgeting, workforce planning, and evaluation of medical service delivery models, using clinical, quality, operational, productivity, access, and financial data to support executive strategy and decision-making.
Evaluate opportunities to improve or redesign medical services, workflows, staffing models, emerging technology utilization, including AI and care-delivery approaches to improve quality, patient access, provider efficiency, and financial performance in order to sustain and grow the mission of FHC.
Collaborate with the CQCO, Risk Manager, and others to lead PDSA cycles to identify and address clinical risk, adverse trends, patient safety concerns, and opportunities for systemic improvement.
Represent medical services as a member of executive leadership with clinical teams, the Board of Directors, community partners, hospitals, payers, regulatory entities, and other stakeholders.
Travel regularly among FHC locations and respond flexibly to site-specific clinical, provider, operational, quality, and or leadership needs, including providing on-site support when needed.
Maintain an active clinical practice and patient panel within FHC for approximately 0.4 FTE.
Stellar communication and collaboration skills with internal and external stakeholders
Strong knowledge of evidence-based medicine and clinical practice standards
Knowledge of FQHC, HRSA, TJC, PCMH and regulatory healthcare regulations
Strong ability to lead provider teams to meet access and productivity metrics while preserving quality
Knowledge of team-based, integrated care and population health strategies
Knowledge of credentialing, privileging, peer chart review, and clinical oversight
Strong leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management skills for diverse provider teams
Strong analytical and data-driven decision making skills, including emerging trends and technologies
Ability to identify and address barriers to provider and team performance with a retention mindset
Ability to balance and build a culture of clinical quality, access, productivity, and financial sustainability
MD, or DO from an accredited institution
5+ years of clinical practice experience in a healthcare setting
3+ years of physician leadership or medical management experience
Experience leading multidisciplinary, team-based care environments
Experience with provider performance, productivity, and clinical quality improvement
Experience in an FQHC or community health setting preferred
Executive or senior healthcare leadership experience preferred
OB experience preferred
Executive or senior healthcare leadership experience preferred
Current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice in the State of Washington as a MD, or DO
