Nature of Work: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for overseeing all financial operations and strategies of the organization. This role involves managing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, reporting and controls to ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organization. The CFO will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and other senior executive leaders to drive strategic initiatives and support the organization’s mission and goals.
Essential Functions:
Senior Leadership and Strategy
- Collaborate with the CEO and serve on the senior executive leadership team, actively contributing to strategic planning, organizational decision-making, and policy development.
- Represent the finance department in senior executive meetings and the Board of Director presentations.
- Provide financial forecasts and projections to support long-term planning.
- Evaluate financial performance and identify areas for improvement.
Team Supervision and Development
- Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Supervises the Finance Directors and serves as back-up.
- Ensure effective communication and collaboration within the finance department and across the organization.
- Participate in the hiring, evaluation, and professional development of the finance team.
- Develop and implement financial strategies, policies, and procedures.
- Oversee the preparation and management of budgets.
- Monitor and manage cash flow, ensuring liquidity and financial stability.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow statements.
- Conduct financial analysis and provide insights to support strategic decision-making.
Accounting and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards as required by the Federal Government, State of Maine and other government agencies.
- Ensure all financial reports (i.e. cost reports, financial statements, billing) are accurate and complete when due.
- Maintains an overall accounting system (i.e. general ledger, chart of accounts, general journal, monthly reconciliation of liability accounts, maintains asset/depreciation schedules, month end journal entries, maintains budgets and authorizes purchases).
- Oversee the accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger.
- Manage annual audits and coordinate with external auditors.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Identify and mitigate financial risks.
- Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets.
- Ensure compliance with insurance and risk management policies.
Special Projects
- Lead and coordinate special financial projects as assigned by the CEO.
- Support fundraising and grant management activities.

Additional Expectations:
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, based on agency needs.
- Travel between agency locations.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks such as typing.
- This is largely a sedentary role, with an occasional requirement to lift office files, products and supplies, up to 35 pounds.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial management, preferably with nonprofits, with at least 3 years in a senior executive leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of financial regulations, accounting principles, and best practices.
- Proficiency in financial software and systems, including QuickBooks and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Ability to pass required background checks, to include: Adult/Child Protective Services; criminal history; OIG Exclusion list; National Sex Offender Registry; Bureau of Motor Vehicles record; and Maine CNA Registry.
