Job summary

Vail Valley Foundation seeks an accomplished Chief Financial Officer to lead all financial operations, governance, and reporting. This executive role oversees budget, forecasting, audits, and board communications, ensuring GAAP compliance and nonprofit stewardship.

The CFO will drive cash flow, risk management, and strategic planning while coordinating with IT, HR, and the executive team. This on-site role in Avon, CO offers comprehensive benefits and leadership impact.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with professional accounting credentials.
  • CPA or MBA/Finance-related Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Proven leadership of teams from junior to senior levels.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring GAAP compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the budget and forecast process across all departments.

  • Lead analyses to enable sound decisions and improve enterprise value.
  • Oversee monthly and year-end forecasting, audits, and reporting to boards.
  • Provide financial reports and balance sheets to Board committees; attend meetings.
  • Guide procurement strategies to maximize cost savings and supplier reliability.
  • Manage consolidated cash flow and funding needs.
  • Participate in executive decision-making and due diligence for mergers or acquisitions.
  • Ensure tax-exempt bond compliance and manage insurance programs.
  • Collaborate with executive team on benefits and long-term strategic planning.
  • Support IT leadership on architecture and asset acquisitions.

Job description

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the budget and forecast process across all departments.
  • Synthesize complex information, generate actionable financial and business insights, and clearly articulate the financial future of the VVF to all stakeholders.
  • Perform complex and varied analyses to enable sound decision-making around near-term and long-term business risks and opportunities, identifying key business insights through data analysis and delivering synthesized and impactful communications that enable better business decisions and improved enterprise value.
  • Responsible for the monthly and year-end forecasting and review process, analysis, revenue projections, general ledger, compliance adherence and reporting, policy implementation, capital and the VVF’s capital campaign, debt management including lines of credit, and the annual audit.
  • Provide the financial reports, forecasts and balance sheet projections for the Board, Board Executive Committee, Board Finance and Investment Committee, and other relevant board committees. Attends all Board and Board Executive Committee meetings with the VVF President. Attends other appropriate board committee meetings to provide financial and forecast updates.
  • Oversee banking activities and access credentials. Guide and implement procurement strategies focused on maximizing cost savings while ensuring supplier reliability.
  • Actively manage consolidated cash flow to ensure appropriate sources of cash are available to meet ongoing needs.
  • Participate in key decision making as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Actively participate in any merger, affiliation, and or acquisition due diligence.
  • Analyze, identify, and recommend revenue and expense opportunities.
  • Manage accounting control systems and internal audits ensuring the accurate and timely production of accounting information and financial reports.
  • Monitor changes in legal, regulatory, and administrative environments and implement procedural changes as needed to maintain compliance while maximizing operational and financial results.
  • Manage tax-exempt bond compliance.
  • Manage/secure/oversee VVF’s commercial and event insurance programs.
  • Work in collaboration with VVF President and Vice President, Human Resources Officer on all benefits, including annual health insurance to include medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, HSA, FSA, 401(k) Plan, compensation, and other benefits.
  • Responsible for long-term financial strategic planning.
  • Responsible for VVF’s leases, most legal needs of the VVF, risk management, bond compliance, and IRS compliance.
  • Guide the VVF IT department specific to network architecture, cyber-attack protection, server administration, software and database acquisitions, event IT needs, and desktop support.
  • The VVF mission is executed on a year-round basis. There will be times when work or additional responsibilities are required by the CFO in the evenings, on weekends, and over holidays.
  • In addition to the above, the CFO will assist the VVF President and members of the Executive Team to improve our organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, and CPA, Masters of Finance or Accounting, or an MBA.
  • Proven skills in managing a team ranging from entry level to experienced professionals and ensuring individual results through proper coaching and mentoring.
  • Unwavering commitment to accounting and financial integrity and transparency.
  • Strong alignment with the values of a mission-driven organization, and a culture that highly values and nurtures supportive relationships among all stakeholders.
  • Highly proficient knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Robust knowledge of the IRS rules and regulations governing all gifts including those from Private Foundations or Donor Advised Funds.
  • Knowledge of and hands on experience with various charitable gift tools & structures including but not limited to donor advise funds, private family foundations, charitable gift annuities, charitable lead trusts and charitable remainder trusts.
  • A self-starter with a known ability to carry out responsibilities without detailed direction and can handle competing demands with tact and creativity.
  • Proven interpersonal skills that enable you to interact easily with everyone, whether a board member, donor, staff or VVF partners.
  • Excellent communicator, both in spoken and written form. Also, a patient listener.

Preferred:

  • Minimum 15 years of proven professional leadership experience in Finance and Accounting.
  • Although it is not a requirement for this position, an ideal candidate will have experience working within a nonprofit organization and a clear understanding of the unique financial, accounting, GAAP, and IRS rules and regulations that govern a 501(C)(3) Nonprofit Corporation.
COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, year-round, exempt, salaried position eligible for Vail Valley Foundation employment benefits.

This is an on-site leadership position based at the VVF’s offices in Avon, CO.

The base annual salary range for this position is $190,000 to $210,000.
