Job summary

Connecticut River Conservancy, a respected nonprofit in Greenfield, MA, is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to steer financial strategy, accounting operations, and regulatory compliance.

You will lead budgeting, audits, grants management, and financial reporting while guiding a four-person finance team and reporting to the Senior Leadership Team. Hybrid work arrangement allows up to two remote days per week; relocation support may be available.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in nonprofit accounting/finance.
• Experience with budgeting, audits, and grants.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• CPA is a plus, but not required.
• Located in or willing to relocate to Greenfield, MA.

Responsibilities

• Lead financial operations and accounting functions.
• Advise the Executive Director, Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board on financial matters.
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and long-term planning.
• Coordinate audits including Single Audits.
• Oversee tax filings, regulatory compliance, grants, and costs.
• Maintain accounting policies, controls, and systems.
• Oversee general ledger, payroll, AP/AR, cash management, and close.
• Monitor investment performance and organizational risk.
• Supervise a 4-person Finance Team and support SLT.

Connecticut River Conservancy is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead financial strategy, accounting operations, compliance, budgeting, audits, and financial reporting for an established nonprofit organization with an $8.1M FY27 budget.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the organization’s financial operations and accounting functions


• Advise the Executive Director, Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board on financial matters


• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and long-term planning


• Manage financial statement audits and Single Audits


• Oversee tax filings, regulatory compliance, grants, and allowable costs


• Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, controls, and systems


• Oversee general ledger, payroll, AP/AR, cash management, and month-end/year-end close


• Monitor investment portfolio performance and organizational riskSupervise a 4-person Finance Team


• Support strategic decision-making as a member of the Senior Leadership Team

Ideal Background

• 5+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting/finance experience


• CFO, Controller, Finance Director, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership experience


• Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, grants, audits, and financial controls


• Experience with budgeting, financial reporting, compliance, and board-level reporting


• Strong leadership and communication skills


• CPA is a plus, but not required


• Candidates currently in Springfield, Worcester, Hartford, Boston, or surrounding areas who are open to relocating to Greenfield are encouraged to apply
