Description
The Chief Estimator will oversee all estimation activities and collaborate with preconstruction and business development teams in reviewing project plans, requirements, and specifications for large heavy civil projects. The role ensures all work is performed accurately and according to standards.
- Oversee and review project plans, requirements, and specifications.
- Demonstrate leadership to coordinate a team of estimators for large multidisciplinary estimates.
- Supervise and mentor estimating staff, including organizing training and growth opportunities.
- Prepare and review accurate quantity takeoffs and materials pricing.
- Determine labor and equipment costs.
- Review bid documents and assess project risks.
- Understand project logistics and schedules.
- Analyze and compare subcontractor and supplier bids.
- Review estimates with the Executive Leadership Team.
- Prepare estimates at various project stages (conceptual, schematic, DD, CD).
- Coordinate with project teams for feedback and future bid improvements.
- Conduct pre-construction meetings with clients, owners, and engineers.
- Act as the company's interface during preconstruction between owner and architect/engineer and facilitate communication.
- Lead business development efforts related to project tracking and partnerships.
- Oversee prequalification, technical, and pricing proposals, and contribute to technical writing.
- Communicate with the parent company regarding estimating department matters.
- Manage and forecast departmental budgets.
- Hire and oversee third-party vendors, including payments and tracking.
- Coordinate with estimators in other divisions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- 7-10 years of experience as a Senior Project Manager, Estimator, or similar role.
- At least 15 years of construction experience.
- Experience in the public works sector.
- Experience with large projects exceeding $100 million.
Preferred
- Advanced skills in estimating software (HeavyBid, Bluebeam).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office and modeling/takeoff programs, including AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of horizontal and infrastructure projects.
- Organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and capable of multitasking.
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines amidst changing demands.
