O&G Industries, Inc., an innovative and diversified construction company located in Torrington, CT, is seeking a Chief Estimator eager to lead a high impact, high performing group of men and women within our Building Group. The position is based in Torrington, CT.

Duties & Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the estimating department in its function of developing hard bids, construction management estimates, design build proposals and any other type of project that requires an estimate
  • Prepare weekly bid calendar and ensure timely completion of estimates
  • Manage and coordinate the department workload
  • Participate in the determination of which projects the company will pursue
  • Evaluate the performance of the department personnel and develop a strategy that will advance the capabilities of the estimating staff through assignments and training
  • Identify and monitor career paths for estimating staff
  • Responsible for hiring and evaluating the estimating staff and training them to ensure that their skill sets will support corporate goals
  • Monitor the success and accuracy of the department’s estimates
  • Oversee the management of the estimating database and historic building costs
  • Review the subcontractor and supplier database
  • Manage the project buyout following a successful bid

Bid Administration

  • Review the subcontractor and material supplier invite list and make recommendations as necessary to the senior estimator
  • Review the detailed estimate summary sheet organized by CSI code or unit price item number
  • Review all estimates for self-performed work that have been prepared by other estimators
  • Review the general conditions pricing for the project
  • Review the qualifications and exceptions to be submitted with proposal if allowed
  • Review the project schedule
  • Identify potential problems with the bid (i.e., scope coverage) and offer solutions to the senior estimator

Project Knowledge

  • Review project documents and understand all aspects of the project
  • Review the Division 1 requirements

Bid Day

  • Offer assistance to the senior estimator in evaluating subcontractor and material quotes
  • Provide leadership of the estimating staff culminating with the decision on the bottom line number to be submitted
  • Evaluate risk on projects when the department is preparing bids and reflect the risk level in the pricing to ensure that the project will be profitable
  • Give input on potential subcontractor buyout and the resultant sub deduct

Post Bid

  • Analyze project performance to understand the successes and failures and apply this knowledge to continuously improve the estimating department's work product

Subcontractor and Material Contacts

  • Manage relationships with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Become aware of the strengths and weaknesses of subcontractors and suppliers
  • Experience with hard bid, construction management and design build estimating
  • Price all divisions of work that O&G self-performs
  • Keep abreast of construction inflation
  • Maintain current cost records for labor, material and equipment
  • Teach fellow estimators to estimate all divisions
  • High level of skill with lump sum, unit price and negotiated estimates

General

  • Dedicate the time necessary to prepare a winning bid and develop skill sets
  • Must be self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency to get the job done
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and have excellent follow-up skills
  • Must act professionally when dealing with fellow employees and external contacts
  • Strive to build winning relationships with other departments within O&G
  • Participate in hiring, evaluating and managing estimating staff
  • Participate in company business development efforts to identify and track potential projects

Marketing

  • The estimator, as an employee of O&G Industries, is a representative of the company and must be available on occasion to participate in marketing functions such as presentations to owners.

Quality Control

  • O&G Industries, Inc. has a Contractor Quality Control Program. The estimator will become familiar with this document and will incorporate its scope into self-performed work estimates. The estimator will ensure that subcontractors and suppliers follow the intent of the Quality Control program.

Qualifications

  • 10-15 years experience with a commercial or industrial general contractor
  • Detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to organize and manage detailed analysis
  • Experience with estimating, scheduling and/or project management technology
  • Have a high degree of competency with Suretrack, Excel and Timberline
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work in a high-pressure environment with tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
