Job summary

South Carolina Department of Environmental Services seeks a General Counsel to lead the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Internal Audits, and the Compliance Office. You will provide strategic legal guidance to executive leadership and program directors, oversee complex litigation, and ensure regulatory compliance across the agency.

Qualifications

• Member of the South Carolina Bar in good standing.
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• At least 10 years of practicing attorney experience including supervisory or lead roles.
• Experience directing or guiding teams of attorneys, auditors, or enforcement professionals.

Responsibilities

• Directs operations of the Office of General Counsel (OGC), Office of Internal Audits (OIA), and Compliance Office (CO).
• Provide strategic legal guidance to executive leadership and program directors.
• Oversee litigation from inception through appeals in administrative tribunals and courts.
• Draft, review, and finalize complex legal documents to ensure accuracy and legal sufficiency.
• Represent the agency in meetings, negotiations, and stakeholder engagements.
