Job summary

Helix Energy Solutions Group seeks a qualified Chief Engineer to oversee the vessel's technical management, structure, equipment and systems aboard a DP class platform. You will enforce safety, maintain NS Enterprise maintenance plans, and keep Master informed.

The role requires STCW III/2, at least 3 years as Chief Engineer or 1st Engineer on a DP vessel, fluent English, and strong leadership. Competitive compensation and opportunities to lead complex marine projects.

Qualifications

  • The Chief Engineer shall be qualified in accordance with STCW 95 Regulation III/2.
  • Minimum 3 years as Chief Engineer or 1st Engineer on a DP vessel; experience on related vessel types is a plus.
  • Fluent in both verbal and written English; computer literate.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee technical management of the vessel, including structure, equipment and systems.
  • Enforce company policies, rules and regulations applicable to the engineering department.
  • Enforce safety and environmental protection requirements for the engineering department.
  • Motivate the engineering crew to follow policies and regulations.
  • Issue clear instructions to watch-keeping engineers and supervise training.
  • Implement maintenance plans per NS Enterprise and keep records up to date.
  • Keep Master/Superintendent informed of engine room activities and incidents.
  • Maintain hull and machinery certification and perform regular space inspections.
  • Control ordering, storage and use of technical spares and consumables; ensure critical spares are stocked.
  • Maintain logs, oil record book and manuals in proper, usable form.
  • Ensure potable water tanks are in good condition and test water as required.
  • Perform emergency duties per Muster List/Station Bill I.
  • Promote safe working practices and coordinate permits to work and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Ensure all engineering personnel are aware of emergency procedures and DP coordination with bridge.

Chief Engineer

Reports To: Master, with a functional reporting line to the assigned Marine Manager / Port Engineer

Job Description
Primary Duties / Responsibilities:
  1. The technical management of the vessel, all aspects of the structure and all equipment and systems being part of the vessel, including vessel owned deck and drilling equipment.
  2. Enforcement of Company policies, statutory rules and regulations, local rules and regulations as applicable to the engineering department.
  3. Enforcement of Client's requirements regarding safety and environmental protection as applicable to the engineering department.
  4. Motivation of the engineering crew in observation of policies, rules and regulations.
  5. Issuing clear and unambiguous instructions to the watch keeping Engineers.
  6. Taking every opportunity to train and improve the skills of his staff.
  7. The implementation of the vessel's NS Enterprise planned maintenance system, ensuring all relevant systems detailed in Section 1 are covered by appropriate maintenance plans, with records maintained to a satisfactory standard to meet with Management and Classification Society approval.
  8. Ensuring that the Master / Superintendent are kept fully informed of all engine room activities, conditions or incidents that may affect the operation of the vessel and that no major repair or maintenance is carried out without the approval of the Master.
  9. Ensuring that certification of hull and machinery system is kept up-to-date.
  10. Carrying out regular inspections of all spaces to confirm standards of operation and maintenance.
  11. Exercising control over ordering, storage and usage of technical and vessel spares and consumables. Ensure safety critical spares are maintained at appropriate levels.
  12. Ensuring all records, machinery log book, oil record book, manuals and technical drawings are updated and maintained in a correct and usable form.
  13. Ensuring potable water tanks are kept in good condition by regular inspections, water test samples and dosage treatment of water (may be done by Chief Officer on some vessels).
  14. Performing emergency duties in accordance with the vessel's Muster List / Station Bill I
  15. Carrying out routine and regular inspections of the vessel with emphasis on safe working practices, cleanliness, hygiene, safety equipment.
  16. Ensuring adequate safe systems of work are adopted for engineering and electrical activities according to any relevant safety regulations and procedures.
  17. Coordinates with Master for authorization for the issue of Permits to Work and Lock-Out /Tag-Out on machinery / high voltage equipment.
  18. Ensuring that all engineering personnel are aware of emergency procedures and the need to keep the DP Operators / Bridge informed of any incident which may affect the position keeping of the vessel.
  19. Participating as a member of the vessel's Safety Committee if so appointed or elected.
Qualifications
  • Education / Training: The Chief Engineer shall be qualified in accordance with STCW 95 Regulation III/2.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years as Chief Engineer or 1st Engineer on a DP vessel. Experience on a relevant vessel type (construction / pipelay / MODU as appropriate) would be an advantage.
  • Skills: Excellent management skills. Fluent in both verbal and written English. Computer literate.
Special Requirements
  • Additional requirements are contained in the Qualifications and Training Matrix appropriate to each vessel.
  • The Chief Engineer has the authority to veto the start or order the termination of any operation. He shall immediately advise the Master / Chief Officer and Superintendent if it would be unsafe to start or continue any operation due to any technical defect.
  • Decision Making: The Chief Engineer coordinates with the Master, Superintendent, 1st Assistant Engineer, Electrician or any other person necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
